Ex-UConn DC one of two hired by Tuberville at UC

Part of the coaching purge when Bob Diaco took over at UConn, ex-Huskies defensive coordinator Hank Hughes has, a month later, landed on his coaching feet.

Hughes, along with Jeff Koonz, has been hired as part of Tommy Tuberville‘s Cincinnati coaching staff. Hughes will hold the titles of co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, while Koonz will handle the Bearcat safeties.

The past 13 seasons for Hughes had been spent at UConn, while Koonz spent the past three years as an assistant at Louisiana Tech. The latter was also a grad assistant under Tuberville at Auburn in 2004.

“Both Hank and Jeff are excellent coaches and recruiters,” Tuberville said in a statement. “We are lucky to have them on our staff. We have put a very strong defensive coaching staff together. I’m looking forward to finishing off a strong recruiting class and am excited for spring football to get started.”

Along with the additions, it was announced that associate head coach Robert Prunty would add the title of co-defensive coordinator.
