New Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason has decided to hire Cardinal linebackers coach David Kotulski as the Commodores’ new defensive coordinator, according to a report on Sunday from CoachingSearch.com.
Kotulski coached linebackers the last two years at Stanford, tutoring such talents as Shayne Skov and A.J. Tarpley, but he spent the previous six seasons as the defensive coordinator at Lehigh. He also had defensive coordinator stints at Holy Cross, Utah State, Bucknell and St. Mary’s. It was at Bucknell that he and Mason first worked together.
It looks like Mason and Kotulski’s first task will be to convert Vandy over from a 4-3 defensive alignment to a 3-4 alignment like they ran at Stanford. To that end, Mason continued to plunder the Stanford coaching staff, bringing in assistant Vavae Tata to coach the Commodore defensive line.
The question for Mason now is who will run the offense? Will he look to duplicate the Stanford scheme or will he hire a spread guy? Our guess is that he’ll run a multiple-look offense until he gets the right personnel in place to give the Cardinal’s grind-it-out approach a try (good luck with that in the SEC!).
