Report: Tommy Bowden in the mix for UAB job

tommy bowden

While the NFL plays its conference title games, the college coaching rumors continue to fly.

The latest word according to is that former Clemson coach Tommy Bowden is in the mix for the UAB job.

Bowden coached the Tigers from 1999 until 2008.  He went 72-45 at Clemson but was never able to win more than nine games in a season.  He resigned mid-way through the 2008 season after a disappointing start. He’s been out of coaching ever since.

All sorts of names have been associated with the UAB job since head coach Garrick McGee left to become the offensive coordinator for Bobby Petrino at Louisville, but a leading candidate has yet to emerge.

Getting Bowden would probably be a coup, as he brings the family name and experience coaching at the lower FBS level, having coached at Tulane prior to moving to Clemson.

A good man and a good coach and ran a clean program. UAB can certainly do worse.

He was an amazing recruiter at Clemson but he was a terrible play caller and I never liked how when things went wrong, he threw his players under the bus… Sometimes the wrong player, like Jadd Dean when his kicks kept getting blocked but it was clearly the special teams line’s fault.

The UAB job is certainly attracting a lot of attention for one that is at or near the bottom of a non-AQ conference. The reason, I think, is that coaches understand what I have been saying about the talent in the Birmingham area going elsewhere to play college ball and that if they can keep those players in town, then the Blazers would have a great team with a shot at winning C-USA. Bowden would be a great hire, as would any of the other names who have been mentioned so far.

I can remember just a few years back when the Bowden family was a brand of its own in college football. You had bobby at FSU, terry at Auburn and Tommy at Clemson. I believe mark was an assistant at FSU as well. But damn!, 3 head coaches of good programs. Kind of incredible really. Look at them now. Bobby run out at FSU, terry coaching at Akron and Tommy “in the mix” for the UAB job. Where’s mark?
