Reports: Florida State promotes Charles Kelly to defensive coordinator

Florida State may have found their new defensive coordinator, and they did not have to look far. Special teams and linebackers coach Charles Kelly will take over as defensive coordinator, according to a report Wednesday evening.

247 Sports was first to report the promotion fo Kelly on Jimbo Fisher‘s staff. ESPN’s Joe Schad later reported the same and added associate head coach duties to defensive line coach Sal Sunseri. The coaching staff change has not been confirmed in an official capacity by Florida State just yet, although it appears to be a safe bet it will happen soon.

It would make sense that Kelly will be taking over the role of defensive backs coach as well. Both duties were previously filled by Jeremy Pruitt, who left Florida State for Georgia following the BCS Championship Game.

Kelly joined the Florida State coaching staff in 2013 after seven years serving various roles on Georgia Tech’s coaching staff. Aside from coaching linebackers at Florida State, Kelly has previously coached defensive backs and been a defensive coordinator at previous stops, including FCS Nicholls State. He was also an interim defensive coordinator for Georgia Tech in 2012.

This was expected if Fisher was going in house, but now the question is whether Sunseri follows Pruitt to Georgia because Kelly was preferred due to his strong defensive backfield coaching reputation.

My guess is no since the rumors swirling around Pruitt’s supposed real reason for departing is out there, but you never know.

I really like this move. Our defense shouldn’t skip a beat.

I’m glad we kept the promotion in house. Continuity is important and this could give all the other assistants confidence that they can see upward mobility in the program.
