Tre Mason’s high school jersey number retired

One of the highest honors a school can pay to a former student athlete is to retire their uniform number. Auburn running back Tre Mason, on his way to the NFL, received that honor from his former high school Friday night.

The No. 10 jersey will never again be worn by a football player at Park Vista High school. It was retired by the Florida high school at halftime of a basketball game during a 15-minute ceremony.

“It’s a blessing to be back here,” Mason said to WPEC-TV. “You never know what tomorrow presents, so it’s just a blessing to be back here and watch my brother (Chauncey Mason).” Mason’s brother is a member of the school’s basketball team.

Mason was a Heisman Trophy finalist and broke a handful of school records, including the school rushing record previously held by Bo Jackson, in helping to lead Auburn to the SEC championship and a berth in the BCS Championship game.
