Report: Rutgers looking to hire ex-Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen as OC

Rutgers is close to hiring ex-Maryland head coach Ralph Friedgen as its offensive coordinator, the New Jersey Star-Ledger reported on Tuesday.

According to the story, Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood should soon reach an agreement with Friedgen, who last coached the Terrapins in 2010. He would replace Ron Prince, who left to become an assistant for the Detroit Lions after one season with the Scarlet Knights.

Friedgen, 66, did a commendable job at Maryland in his 10 seasons, going 75-50 with seven bowl victories. He is known for being an offensive innovator and getting the most out of his talent, so he’ll be a great fit for Rutgers as they move to the Big Ten.

Replacing Ron Prince with Ralph Friedgen?! That almost isn’t fair. What a coup if they can pull that off.

Does Friedgen just not want to be a head coach any longer? With his record even at his age I’d think he’d be in the running for a lot of jobs. Going 25 games over .500 at Maryland is quite the feat.

He’s still active at that age and all that weight? It’s a miracle.

Hats off to Rutgers for this gem. A hire that good will surely enhance their recruitments status. And also make them eminently more interesting to watch.

Congrats to Rutgers if they can pull this off.

Fridge has a track record of success running many different types of systems and is the definition of your old school football coach.

Also had the pleasure of hearing him speak a few times at events when he was still coaching at GT back in the 90′s. Classy and funny guy.

Question is… Can we keep him for more than one season?

Actually, the real question is whether he’s going to e Rutgers head coach after next season.
