Report: Auburn’s Chip Lindsey hired as Southern Miss OC

Southern Mississippi head coach Todd Monken has hired Auburn quality control assistant Chip Lindsey to be his offensive coordinator, AL.com reported on Wednesday.

Lindsey didn’t actually coach for the Tigers this past season, but was a high school head coach the previous two years and, before that, the quarterbacks coach for Troy in 2010.

Returning USM quarterback Nick Mullens was coached by Lindsey at Spain Park High in Hoover, Ala., so he’ll have a familiar face to work with.

“I’m extremely excited and thankful for this opportunity that coach Monken has given me,” Lindsey said. “It’s definitely kind of a next step in my career, and I can’t think of a better guy to do it with.”

This could be a good hire for the Golden Eagles as Lindsey’s spread offensive style is in step with Monken’s. Plus, he’s sure to bring over some tricks he learned from Auburn’s offensive guru, Gus Malzahn, as well.

With USM winning just one game over the last two seasons, it will take all the help it can get.
