Top recruit visited by rival coaching staffs at family party

Gus Malzahn AP

Prep All-American linebacker Rashaan Evans had a party on Saturday that his family will never forget.

The event, celebrating his grandfather’s 80th birthday, featured visits by both the Alabama and Auburn coaching staffs, as both schools took advantage of the final day of allowable contact between coaches and recruits to make one last pitch for the 5-star talent.

“It was Bama and Auburn in the same room. Really a once in a lifetime event,” said the elder Evans.

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn was in the house and accompanied by the entire Tigers defensive staff, while Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart was joined by his fellow assistants Lance Thompson, Burton Burns and Bo Davis.

“Both staffs were very cordial to each other. They ended up hanging out together and both trying to talk to Rashaan whenever they could,” said Evans’ grandfather.

Evans will announce his college decision on Wednesday and is expected to choose between Auburn and Alabama.

” Freddo brought the $2 million that is in your room.
I’m going in to take a nap, when I get up and see the $2 million on the table, I know I have a partner, If I don’t see it, I know I don’t.”

I read articles like this and wonder which school will make an offer “He can’t refuse.”

Considering the 2 teams involved, the bidding must be over 6 figures.

Reports out of Tuscaloosa are that signed Evans pictures are hanging up in Tom Al-Betar’s shop. I wonder what that could mean.

The sleazy part of recruiting. Gees, it’s a family gathering, but that’s why these teams play in national championship games.

There was a bunch of sleaze balls at that party. Those two schools can furnish a lot of them.

Big statement that Saban wasn’t there I would assume. It says a lot when the head coach from one program shows up and the other does not.

Actually, showing up for a family gathering is low on the recruiting sleaze scale–and the family didn’t have to let them in. Sounds as though they got a kick out of it. Yes, it is why these teams and a few others are consistently successful–but I wouldn’t want my kid on the receiving end of that kind of pressure.
