Alabama adds former Georgia Bulldog, star JUCO TE to Class of 2014

Ty Flournoy-Smith, Ken Malcome, Alexander Ogletree AP

Closing in on National Signing Day, Alabama’s Class of 2014 is coming together. On Monday the Crimson Tide added one of the nation’s top junior college players. According to an AL.com report, Georgia Military College tight end Ty Flournoy-Smith (Rivals profile) will join Alabama in 2014.

Flournoy-Smith previously played football for the Georgia Bulldogs. He played in eight games before running in to some legal trouble. Flournoy-Smith was arrested after calling in a false crime in February 2012. Flournoy-Smith had exchanged his textbooks for cash and later reported them stolen. At the end of that spring semester Flournoy-Smith explored his transfer options, perhaps needing a step back in atmosphere. After a year in junior college, the Georgia native is ready to give it another shot in the SEC.  Alabama will hope that the time away served their new tight end well.

Flournoy-Smith did not rack up huge numbers in 2013 at Georgia Military College, but his blocking skills make him a valuable asset in any offense designed to run the football. With Alabama tending to utilize a power running game, solid blocking is a necessity wherever it can be found. Alabama is not exactly shallow on tight end depth heading in to the 2014 season as it stands now, so Flournoy-Smith will have to work to get some significant playing time. He will be eligible to play in 2014 though, should he be worthy of working his way on to the playing field.

Flournoy-Smith held offers from Louisville and South Florida and he visited Alabama in late January. That was followed up over the weekend with a visit from Nick Saban and defensive coordinator Kirby Smart. National signing day is Wednesday.

Did he sign for an Athletic or Academic Scholarship?

A couple dozen players committed to various schools in the past few days. So, why is it everything Alabama does has to become newsworthy, especially an average TE? Newsflash, Bama didn’t win the national championship and this is not a recruiting site

  3. normtide says: Feb 4, 2014 1:40 AM

With O.J. Howard emerging as a receiving threat, Bama needs a blocking TE to replace Volger. I would expect him to take on the H back spot straight away.

SoFlo- why did you click on the story then? There are dozens of stories here that I skip every week. Seems easier then reading them, then complaining.

Winning 3 out of the last 5 NC’s apparently does wonders for creating interest in a team(as well as creating negativity towards it) . To break it down further,Alabama has won more titles than they have lost in the last five years. That makes them newsworthy. Get it. But hey, beating Clemson and escaping Auburn(Alabama couldn’t) that one time is a tremendous feat ,so more FSU postings please….

Textbooks for cash?? Perfect fit, can get free suits for autographs while at it.

Should fit right in at Alabumpkin! Oh, btw, did you see how that Big 10 quarterback kicked the krap out of the $ECheat quarterback in the Super Bowl? Just sayin’.

  7. woebegong says: Feb 4, 2014 8:05 AM

UGA is making a habit of this, although I am glad they don’t tolerate dishonest behavior from their players. There is Marshall that is now on Auburns team, another kid who now plays for Baylor, and now this fellow.
I am not sure if this indicates that the other schools have lower standards in that area, or are just being more tolerant of a players misdeeds. UGA usually tries to straighten them out and they usually get a second chance, but that is it then.
I tend to favor the more strict handling of these guys, like UGA does, because they also need to have decent principles, and these folks are pretty lucky to be getting a free ride in a major college, based mostly off, if not entirely, of their athletic skills.

  8. whydoupost says: Feb 4, 2014 8:52 AM

Woebegone – have you looked at UGA’s arrest records under Richt? No better than anyone else’s…possibly worse!

  9. woebegong says: Feb 4, 2014 9:20 AM

It is how it is handled by Richt and UGA that makes a difference. According to the stats. of the NCAA, UGA and Kentucky have the most strict policies for instance concerning drugs in all of the DIV. I.
It is how the school handles the arrest and violations that makes the difference.

Will this put Alabama over the salary cap.

  11. dhardy8207 says: Feb 4, 2014 11:25 AM

lol… Hater alert!..CFT has been riddled with articles regarding youngsters from other schools/divisions getting popped for much worse violations such as sexual assault, drug offenses, DUIs, public intoxications, domestic assaults, you name it.

Strange, never see some of these bloggers post until it mentions an SEC school…

  12. woebegong says: Feb 4, 2014 11:33 AM

You funny hardy! Um, what part of my statement is untrue? $ECheat conference “schools” have more players in the “Local Section” than any other conference. Wilson>>>>>>>Manning in Super Bowl!!

  15. normtide says: Feb 5, 2014 9:57 AM

Under your logic, the b1g is the sexual assault league. Including Wisconsin and their assistant AD. And now who is living off other’s glory, you claiming a super bowl win from Seattle? Then again, packers fans have to get by however they can. Also, Wilson is actually a NCState alum. Packers QB has a glass jaw lol. On Feb 5, 2014 8:26 AM, “CollegeFootballTalk” wrote:

Penn State isn’t a original member of the Big 10 and personally I never wanted them in it. Wilson doesn’t acknowledge being a NC State alum and if you can read, his college is WISCONSIN when they show what college players are from! Rodgers best qb rating ever, MVP and Super Bowl MVP. How is Alabumpkin’s pro football team doing? How is Alabumpkin’s basketball and hockey teams doing? Seems Big 10 and PAC 10 players had a pretty good Super Bowl eh?
So, how many “Hooked on Phonics” courses do they offer at Alabumpkin?

  17. normtide says: Feb 5, 2014 11:04 AM

Actually, in case you haven’t heard, the crimson tide is doing pretty good. Nice six year run. As for pro teams, we have the same amount of super bowl wins as Wisconsin over the last couple years. If you want to get technical, I’m an hour away from Nashville, away from Atlanta, an hour to a train that runs to New Orleans. I bet I’m located closer to any of these three teams as you are to Green Bay. And, from reading your posts, education isn’t your strong point. You may not want to bring that up so much.

That would require the school to actually have academics.

Norm, I’ve forgotten more than you will ever know in seven lifetimes. Good to know you’re far enough from actual places to actually be from nowhere. Oh, Green Bay has 13 world championships….how many does Alabumpkin’ have? Oh, was funny watching you guys get totally shut down on two inches of snow. In a few weeks I’ll be 2 1/2 hrs from Green Bay and twenty minutes from Camp Randall and the Kohl Center while you live in your intellectual and cultural vacuum.

  19. normtide says: Feb 5, 2014 3:14 PM

Nobody brags about going to Wisconsin my friend. You always talk about how smart you are, but never show it. Most people see what that adds to. I would ask why you gripe about other teams instead of praising your own, but your a badger fan. Sort of explains it all lol. But hey, in two weeks you will be around people who actually think Wisconsin is a destination. Have fun with that.

  20. waynefontes says: Feb 6, 2014 6:24 AM

Packerbadger, why do you always bring up hockey? I understand your football team continues to lose to the SEC (on and off the field), but you always fall back on college hockey.

There are only 59 teams that play NCAA division 1 hockey. Most of those are teams are small schools that don’t play big time sports. There are only six Big Ten schools that even field a program. It’s not even the best of the lower profile college sports.

Why don’t you ever brag about Wisconsin’s college baseball program? Oh that’s right, they even don’t have one. How embarrassing.

Almost as embarrassing as thinking that living 2 1/2 hours from Green Bay is something to brag about.

  21. normtide says: Feb 6, 2014 7:56 AM

Wayne, Packer actually lives in the south. That’s the punch line. Only place he can find work.

No one plays hockey. No one cares about hockey. The NFL draft and college football signing day gets better ratings than hockey. The only amazing thing about hockey, they actually get French men to fight. But even then, they fight like girls.

  22. packerbadger says: Feb 6, 2014 8:06 AM

LOL @ norm!! Yeah, Alabumpkin’ is a real gem. One of the poorest and dumbest states in the country. Other than a college football team, it pretty much offers NOTHING! Should have let the British have it…. it costs our country more to hang on to it than it offers.
I bet you were pounding your chest when our Olympic hockey team beat the Russians in “Miracle on Ice”.

Wayne… living in Madison, considered one of the best cities to live in America is something to brag about. Now, you two guys can go back to fighting the Civil War.

  23. normtide says: Feb 6, 2014 8:21 AM

Alabama is a leader in rocket tech, space tech, and military tech. Wisconsin is a leader in cheese tech. No comparison. Your only making a fool of yourself. And, every city calls itself a great place to live. Quit reading local material.

Hockey, where nothing has happened in 30 years. Basically, when your state has absolutely NOTHING else going on, hockey is your biggest sport.

Latest reports have Wisconsin as the 31st best state to live, based on things to do. Alabama is 17th. From space camp to the first mardi gras. Wisconsin has Canada.

  24. normtide says: Feb 6, 2014 8:23 AM

Wisconsin is so awesome, it’s biggest supporter (you) moved away. I’ll drop the Mic and walk off stage now.

  25. packerbadger says: Feb 6, 2014 10:10 AM

You’re an idiot norm. Probably a teabagger that takes its cues from Faux and takes a kernel of “fact” and distorts it into an entirely different story. If you didn’t get it before, I’m moving back from the racist , bigoted, uneducated south. You have NO knowledge of Wisconsin and you wouldn’t get the fact that its an industrial leader in america. You my friend are the fool. You can quit fighting the war anytime now. How’s Alabumpkin’s basketball team doing? Oh, tourism is Wisconsin’s third leading industry and we feed inbreds like you because of our agriculture. I know why they call it a “tooth” brush down here now…

  26. normtide says: Feb 6, 2014 10:40 AM

A hockey fan talking about teeth, funny. I guess the south has nothing to do with agriculture. You really aren’t very smart, are you? Wisconsin WAS a leader in industry. Not anymore. You forget, I have contacts there through my job. Wisconsin is a rural version of Detroit now. That’s why you don’t live there. It’s cheese and cows, and but much else. I will give them credit, taking the power away from unions, but it’s too late. Those jobs are here now. Hell, snap-on moved there plant about 20 miles from here. Better workers, better weather, Wisconsin never really had a chance. The one correct point you have is tourism. Some great retreats there, but really, does it compare to the beach? So even that lags behind Alabama. Read some current studies, Wisconsin isn’t what it was, Alabama and the rest of the South has surpassed your winter wonder land.

  27. normtide says: Feb 6, 2014 10:42 AM

Oh, for a poster on CFT, you never talk about football. That speaks volumes

  28. woebegong says: Feb 6, 2014 10:49 AM

    Norm,

You will not get any place corresponding with this guy. Having lived and been stationed in both Alabama and Madison WI., long enough to form an opinion of both, I drew my own conclusions.
I live in Georgia and it wasn’t just because of the nicer weather. My late wife was born and raised in Wisconsin (Madison), and she loved it when we moved to the South.
Jealousy is one of the most destructive traits and unfortunately it is alive and well in some peoples lives. I have a friend in Madison still and she complains constantly about the problem with drugs there and she lives in a pretty nice neighborhood.

  29. packerbadger says: Feb 6, 2014 2:18 PM

Oh, for a poster on CFT, you never talk about football.
    ==================================
Alabama/$ECheat football in local section more than anything. Speaks volumes about your program. At least Wisconsin’s players can read.
Woebegone… you’re full of krap. My sister in law lives in Alabama and she’s tired of all the neighbors sleeping with family members in plain view, and she lives in the most upper class neighborhood in Tuscaloosa.
Its cold in Wisconsin in the winter, but I can put a coat on. Down south, ya just can’t fix stupid.

  30. normtide says: Feb 6, 2014 4:17 PM

Yet, you have not fixed stupid yet either.

  31. woebegong says: Feb 6, 2014 5:17 PM

Perhaps you didn’t read the post correctly. My friend lives in Wisconsin and has all her life, as my late wife had. She complained to me about all of the crime in her neighborhood up there.
As for fixing stupid. One has to wonder why folks from the north keep migrating south if it is so bad. I think the cold has frozen what little brain matter you might have had. Having lived almost all over the country sat different times in my career, I can assure you there are stupid people in every state. In fact, it is not even limited to just the USA.
Have a good day, but don’t let the hate you display destroy you completely.

  32. packerbadger says: Feb 7, 2014 8:18 AM

Hey, how many Olympians does Alabumpkin have in Sochi?….. or the rest of the south?

Woeisme…. most stupid states in the country are Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas………

  33. woebegong says: Feb 7, 2014 8:24 AM

We don’t get a great deal of snow and ice down south so I wouldn’t expect to see a whole lot of winter Olympians. Even a super intelligent guy like you (Cough Cough), should be able to figure that out.

  34. normtide says: Feb 7, 2014 9:35 AM

It’s the winter Olympics, ask again in two years. Seriously, who watches the winter version. NBC admitted they only air them to get the summer games. Dude, do you ever tire of making a fool of yourself, while bragging about how smart your are? You hate the south and love Wisconsin. You live in the south. Haha. Even you won’t live there

  35. normtide says: Feb 7, 2014 9:36 AM

Oh, and awesome recruiting class at UW. Definitely a big time program. Funny how you never brought that up on a signing class post. You remind me of Baghdad Bob. Working hard to avoid the bitter truth. Your about as believable as him too

    @Normtide;

Seriously, no sense in trying to debate with someone who doesn’t get out. Assylums don’t let the mentally ill out very often; apparent by this statement where he’s touting about something that occurred more than 30 years ago.

Now I always support our young men and women during any team or single competition, but to try and glorify ONE victory out of many winter olympic events/meetings that we’ve had against Russia and other hockey powerhouse teams just goes to show packerbadger is not dealing with reality. Its the same reason he keeps spouting off that the “south is still fighting the civil war”. There is a small group of “confederate supporters” that annually reinact the civil war but the key word here is “SMALL”.

Pack, is bitter and it begs the question of why he ever moved to the south and still resides here (supposedly) to this day. Oh, and before he spouts off that “he’s soon out of here” he’s been saying that for months…

  37. bamamanchip says: Feb 9, 2014 7:42 PM

All I see every single time something anything is written about Alabama or an Alabama player – some idiot has got to put some sort of hate up about Alabama but yet Alabama fans get talked bad about for being bad people / fans but Alabama fans don’t go on other fan bases things and write a bunch of hate on their programs, so I guess most Alabama fans have more class than that … It doesn’t matter to me if it’s a Alabama fan putting up hate on another program or a fan putting up hate on Alabama , it’s not right to do jealousy breads hate and it’s not Gods way and should not be done period…
