College football’s best player in 2013 has been named one of the best college baseball players expected to play in 2014. Baseball America named Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston to their third team All-America preseason team on Monday.
Winston was named to the third team as a utility player. Winston played in the outfield and pitched for Florida State in 2013, which should be expected of him again in 2014 for the baseball team. One of the reasons Winston chose to attend Florida State was the opportunity to play both sports.
Winston was a consensus All-American in football in 2013, which should come as little surprise considering he was the Heisman Trophy winner in a runaway competition down the stretch. Winston’s successful season also saw the two-sport star take home the Walter Camp Award, the Manning Award, a handful of additional player of the year honors as well as ACC conference honors for player of the year, offensive player of the year, offensive rookie of the year and rookie of the year. Winston ended the season by leading Florida State to a fourth quarter rally for the BCS Championship against SEC champion Auburn.
Last season on the baseball field Winston batted .235 and had a 3.00 ERA while playing the outfield and pitching in relief for the Seminoles. Florida State played in the NCAA tournament and won a conference championship as well.
