When you have two recruiting powerhouses in your rearview, you normally don’t get anywhere close to comfortable until ink is put to paper.
Fortunately for Al Golden, the words of Chad Thomas‘ high school coach a couple of days before signing day — “I’d be very, very surprised if he goes anywhere but Miami” — held true.
Sticking to his guns in the face of a late recruiting assault from both Alabama and Florida State, the Miami Booker T. Washington product officially sent in his signed National Letter of Intent to Miami Saturday morning. Thomas had committed to the Hurricanes in July of last year.
This past weekend, Thomas took an official visit to Tuscaloosa, with Nick Saban and assistant Mario Cristobal making one final, although ultimately unsuccessful recruiting pitch. Thomas also visited Tallahassee late last month.
Thomas is a consensus five-star recruit, rated by Rivals.com as the No. 22 player in the country and the No. 2 weakside defensive end. In the talent-rich state of Florida, the 6-5, 229-pound end was rated as the No. 4 player at any position.
