LSU officially loses special teams coordinator to NFL

Nearly two weeks after reports surfaced connecting Thomas McGaughey to the NFL, that move has come to fruition.

LSU confirmed in a press release Thursday that McGaughey has left his post as special teams coordinator to take the same job with the New York Jets. The NFL club had announced his hiring a short time before the Tigers’ confirmation.

“This is a great opportunity for Thomas,” head coach Les Miles said in a statement. “He will do a great job with the Jets. We wish Thomas and his family continued success in the future.”

McGaughey had spent the past three seasons in Baton Rouge, but served as an assistant at the professional level for eight of the 10 years prior to coming to the Tigers.

As noted by the school in its release, among McGaughey’s standouts during his time at LSU include two All-America return specialists in Tyrann Mathieu and Odell Beckham Jr., along with All-America punter Brad Wing.
