Five-star Alabama athlete Bo Scarbrough will start career at tailback

Bo Scarbrough

In recruiting, the ‘athlete’ tag is given to a player for one of two reasons: He either has the athletic potential to excel at any number of positions, or he doesn’t really seem to have a true position and evaluators call him an athlete because they don’t know where he’ll end up.

Less than a week after signing his letter of intent with Alabama, five-star athlete Bo Scarbrough already has his position. He’s going to be a tailback in the Crimson Tide offense, according to head coach Nick Saban. But make no mistake, he won’t just be a grind-it-out type of back.

“We think Bo is a multi-talented guy but we look at him as a running back first,” Saban told Al.com. “He has really a diverse skill level for a big guy, he’s a physical guy. He has really good running ability but he also has great receiving skills. He’s actually played as much wide receiver as he has running back.”

However, Saban wants to avoid the temptation to play him at any other spot.

“As a running back, we can use him in those kind of roles and if he can learn and be ready to help us, I think that because of the kind of player he is, maybe he will be able to contribute in other ways as a player besides running back,” Saban said. “That’s how we would use him as a running back, not playing him at another position.”

If there’s any drawback to this move, it’s that Alabama’s backfield is ridiculously crowded with depth. Not only is TJ Yeldon back for at least one more season, there’s also the quickly-developing Derrick Henry, plus Kenyan Drake, Jalston Fowler, Altee Tenpenny, Dee Hart and Tyren Jones.

But at 6-foot-2, 234 pounds, Scarbrough — ranked the 16th-best player in the country by Rivals.com — has the potential to be scary good. His size-speed combination is rare. Here’s a look at his highlight reel. It won’t be the last highlight you’ll see from him.

Man, Alabama is loaded in the backfield for sure. I would bet this kid will be used more in passing situations as a tailback, then as a pure running back, out of the backfield. Might be a good wrinkle and give defenses something else to think about when he is in there as well. Good decoy, or a pass catch for short, passes, on some plays. That could sure help the new QB, as a Safety might have to stay on him, or even an outside LB, if he doesn’t get the hand off.

    Leonard Fournette will be better.

  3. dhardy8207 says: Feb 9, 2014 10:49 AM

6-2 234 lbs he’s already as bigger than Yeldon his freshman year and taller than Henry. Fowler hasn’t been the same since he came back from his knee injury but still a solid player. Going to be great to see all this talent take the field…

    RTR, simply RTR

Gee thanks Mr. Saban for signing another running back who will truck our linebackers and safeties on the way to the endzone.

Signed, The Rest of the SEC.

Good think a team full of 5 star athletes can’t stop a field goal return…amiright?

  7. 666undead says: Feb 9, 2014 1:56 PM

I would think a Tuscaloosa college full of five star teachers could stop you from looking like a dumbass when you attempt to use grammar. Am I right?

  8. normtide says: Feb 9, 2014 4:13 PM

The early word I hear is they would like him to be a Harvin type, as in lining up in different spots and getting touches in multiple ways. He could be the catalyst for the new look Bama offense, especially in 2015. As for the pure RB position, if Henry doesn’t get at least 50% of the touches, something is wrong. I expect Yeldon to play off Henry like he did with Lacey.

That’s not a running back. That’s a small condominium. Holy crap! Good for the SEC. Bad for the REST of the SEC. Good luck ‘Bama fans. Have a great season and go easy on us when September 20th rolls around, please.

  10. normtide says: Feb 9, 2014 11:41 PM

Go easy on you? I expect a tough game. Florida has a ton of talent, they just need to put it together. That is what the off-season is for. I’m also sure that Bama will get the Gator’s best shot. Best of luck to both teams.

Doesn’t matter who they have on their roster. We at Oklahoma recruit football players. As you witnessed in the Sugar Bowl, it’s all about heart. We would still smack Alabama in the mouth if we were to play them next year in the BCS Championship. Alabama does not intimidate us or any SEC team.

  12. woebegong says: Feb 10, 2014 7:26 AM

Exactly what is Oklahoma’s bowl record over say, the last decade? How many BCS Championships has Oklahoma won?
You did beat Alabama this past year, this is true, but I wouldn’t be so quick to anoint yourself the next national champion, based off of one win in a BCS bowl in a decade.
The SEC is still the strongest conference in college football, and one win certainly against one SEC team doesn’t elevate you to superman status. Do it consistently for a few years and maybe you might have some bragging rights at that point. Right now, your comments are pretty ridiculous .

Very rarely does someone person hit the lottery twice. In the sugar bowl a different (mindset) Bama team took the field and the hungry team won. It was by no means a “beat down” nor did Oklahoma “run all over Bama”. Have no problem with you enjoying your team’s success but to predict future meetings off that one game is foolish thinking…

LOL….you are such a bumpkin….an Alabumpkin at that!! How many Nobel or Pulitzer prizes does Alabumpkin have? Oh, what school has the NCAA rushing record holder? I’ll tell you…..its Wisconsin!!!
I still enjoy watching that kick-off return from Auburn!!
Oh, how many NCAA football championships has Olkahoma won? I’ll tell you….17!!!

ESPN ranked Oklahoma as the most prestigious college football program overall since the advent of the AP Poll in 1936.

Try engaging brain and facts before fingers/mouth next time…you look like an idiot.

  15. woebegong says: Feb 10, 2014 10:17 AM

    Not from Alabama idiot, I
and I do mean Idiot. How come you can never stay on topic. It is about football . Try growing up and don’t even try and question my intelligence because I will compare my degree and the jobs I had, prior to retiring any time you feel the need to do so.
ESPN ranking anybody is their opinion idiot. ESPN is a sports news reporting channel, and not anymore qualified than you, to rank anything.
As for Nobel or Pulitzer prizes, try and remember that Obama won, one of those, so tell me how great that makes it?

  16. normtide says: Feb 10, 2014 10:32 AM

Has Packer ever spoke of Wisconsin football? Nope. That’s all you need to know.

  17. packerbadger says: Feb 10, 2014 10:55 AM

Badgers had a good FOOTBALL recruiting class with a class act coach….unlike Nick Satan. Wisconsin actually requires our football players maintain a GPA unlike Alabumpkin. Wisconsin finished 22nd in final ranking. Our basketball team is in a rut, but will be a top ten team by the end of the yr because the Big 10 is by far the best conference in basketball. Our hockey team just swept the #1 team and is in the top 10. See, we have to spread our wealth to many sports unlike Alabumpkin and again, our athletes actually take real courses in school. Again, norm, how many athletes does Alabumpkin have in the Olympics?
Woeisme, does it physically hurt to be as stupid as you are? I mean, is there actual pain? You claim you’re not from Alabumpkin buy you are a Bumpkin fan…… I say you’re a band wagon fan. Oklahoma has won waaaaay more than Alabumpkin. Btw, I’ll put my degrees and accomplishments up against yours ANY DAY!!

  18. packerbadger says: Feb 10, 2014 10:57 AM

Btw, that recruit looks like he’s 30 yrs old; maybe he is. Wonder how many tries it took to get him thru high school. Should fit right in Alabumpkin as “education” is optional. Nicky boy will get him thru one way or another eh? Lol!!

  19. normtide says: Feb 10, 2014 11:52 AM

Man, you are so eat up with Bama. They are in your head, bad. I love it! Then again, if I was from Wisconsin, guess I’d find a real football team to talk about too.

Olympics? Call me when it’s the summer version, the one people watch.

  20. rolltide510 says: Feb 10, 2014 12:07 PM

Olympics? Oh wait, Big 10 fans must be trying to be relevant, so the conversation needs to stop being about football. Got it.

FACT and I know you don’t deal with facts usually, but here goes one for ya…

Alabama graduates 80% of their football players under Nick Saban. 13 of the senior players this year had already received their degree before the season was over..

Bigotry and envy are such unflattering and ignorant traits, and I notice that you never comment on anything that has to do with Wisconsin football and yet you profess to be a fan. However, you never miss a Bama or Saban article. Actions speak for themselves, either your secretly in love with Saban or you’re really envious that Wisconsin football just doesn’t measure up….

I am an a SEC fan, and I live in Georgia. Luckily, I know enough about football and organization to understand it. Having lived in Wisconsin for 6 years, and at Madison to boot, I am well aware of some folks like you that are arrogant and out of touch with reality. My late wife was born and raised there, and spent 48 years there and even she didn’t care a lot for it. We moved to Georgia to take a job with a tech. company, and never considered moving back to Wisconsin.
I am not a native Southerner, but have lived and been stationed here a great deal of my life and fell in love with the south and would never consider moving up north, much less Wisconsin. Perhaps you should quit talking about it and move back there yourself.
Like I said, anytime you want to compare degrees and for that fact, jobs worked in your degree, I am more than willing to do that comparison. Until then, I find you rather boring and very childish.

  23. normtide says: Feb 10, 2014 1:42 PM

The punchline is: Packer doesn’t live in Wisconsin. He lives in the south. True story. Even he can’t stand to live there. I’m still laughing.

    Woebegone says;

“Like I said, anytime you want to compare degrees and for that fact, jobs worked in your degree, I am more than willing to do that comparison. Until then, I find you rather boring and very childish”

Packer says he’s a physician and as norm says he supposedly lives in the south. Can’t imagine the type of care he gives the redneck, imbred, toothless, illiterate folks he encounters as patients? :-(

  25. packerbadger says: Feb 10, 2014 2:22 PM

Sorry, Rap sheets don’t count as term papers. If Alabumpkin players attended Wisconsin classes, you may graduate 10% on a good year.

Norm, I know you’re slow, but again; I’m moving back to Wisconsin in a few weeks….get it?

Ok woeisme….. BS, MS, MD. Athletically, NCAA All-American, 1984 Olympic Trials competitor. Own my own clinic and sale will be transacted in a few weeks. Have numerous other awards, etc, but I think I’ve revealed enough.

STOP with the BS! You said that same statement in a comment back to me 2 months ago… I know time gets away from you in that padded room doesn’t it…

  27. packerbadger says: Feb 10, 2014 2:56 PM

hardy…. you do know business transactions have glitch’s in them. No big deal. Could be two weeks, or three or four weeks….depends on paperwork, banks, etc…..understand? I’m guessing not.

Georgia eh? Yeah, you guys looked real smart a couple weeks ago going out for a drive on ice that was forewarned to you. I’m guessing you were one of the ones parked on the interstate.

  28. 8to80texansblog says: Feb 10, 2014 3:51 PM

Wow….. this board has gotten out of control…..

  29. normtide says: Feb 10, 2014 7:48 PM

For all those accolades, your not very smart. Not a good reflection on Wisconsin’s academics.

  30. woebegong says: Feb 10, 2014 8:01 PM

Norm, I would bet he is a proctologist, because he sure is a pain in the ***, and he has to be embarrassed as much as he embarrasses himself on here.

You would think a supposedly highly professional person in the medical profession wouldn’t act like such a fool wouldn’t you? Probably has to leave because if he acts in person likes he acts from behind a computer, I doubt he had many patients. The state of Alabama will gain by losing in this case.

  31. normtide says: Feb 10, 2014 11:34 PM

I doubt he is a doctor. Just read what he posts. He avoids questions asked to him and typically rants like a child. Thinking whoever speaks loudest and repeats the most words wins. Also once before he mentioned being a lawyer. I add it up as a basement overlord.

Bama has recent titles in football, softball, golf, gymnastics (Alabama is the Alabama of gymnastics), and tennis. Generally making the college world series in baseball. I don’t know of anything UW does really well. As for claims that the b1g is the best basketball league, when was it’s last title? When was the last one that wasn’t MSU? Sounds like a one team league, just like they are in football.

  32. packerbadger says: Feb 11, 2014 8:47 AM

Hey woeisme….. I see like to talk the talk but don’t walk the walk. I guess that makes you a full of krap wannabe. I guess your two year degree makes you a effin’ Einstein in your neck of the woods. You and norm can both go back to your self gratifying circle jerk of how Alabumpkin is the greatest place and the hub of the universe goes right thru Alabumpkin footballs azz. Me, I’m going back to civilization in a couple weeks where the current temp there resembles the IQ’s of down here. If its cold out, I can put on a coat; down here, ya just can’t fix stupid!

  33. woebegong says: Feb 11, 2014 9:18 AM

Sorry to disappoint you idiot but unlike your supposedly doctors, or is it lawyers degree, I have a genuine one in Meteorology. I also did astrological research for three year in Australia, but of course you probably don’t know what that is. Look in up under the government records. It is a public record.
I have spent 6 years in what you call a civilized place in Madison, and I much prefer the warmth of the south, and for that fact, the friendlier folks here.
As Norm said, in so many words, you have more B.S. than a Christmas Turkey, but you can keep on spouting your B.S., but as for me, I no longer have the time, to talk or respond to you IDIOT. You really just aren’t worth it, and you gives nice folks from the state of Wisconsin a bad rap just by saying that’s where you belong and are from.

  34. taintedlombardis says: Feb 13, 2014 2:30 AM
