Michigan QB Gardner running for first time in three months

Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner is running his way back in to the competition for the starting job this spring, literally. For the first time since injuring his foot in late November, Gardner is running on a treadmill.

Gardner posted to his Instagram account a video of his running on a treadmill while doing some rehab. The filter on it is unnecessary of course, but the image of a running Gardner has to be a positive sight for Michigan fans, especially with the brief glance in to the lens of the camera at the end. It’s so mesmerizing.

Gardner was second on the team in rushing in 2013 with 48 yards and 11 touchdowns. The season was supposed to see Michigan move to a more traditional style of offense following the graduation of Denard Robinson, but it became clear that when Gardner was free to use his legs to his advantage that thing seemed to work better for the Wolverines.

Gardner is expected to compete with Shane Morris this spring for the starting job in 2014. Gardner was the starting quarterback for Michigan in 2013, but Morris got a chance to show what he can do as the season once Gardner got banged up and missed the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl in Arizona. Morris completed 24 of 38 passes for 196 yards for the Wolverines in a loss to Kansas State. How much of the spring Gardner participates in is expected to be limited, which should give Morris more snaps to work with the offense.

They need more than two healthy QBs to face the Spartans. They cannot stop the MSU defense.

Yes! The thought of Gardner being ready for Spring just made my day.

Ya’ll better slow down. You had a nice year (wrecking our chance at a NCAA title). Props for that but you will always be an after thought to is and even your big brother.

Spartans fans win the Rose Bowl once in their lifetime, now they’re all over the blogs talking.

You guys are so adorable. One day, Michigan state fans will remember that they’re Michigan state fans. I’m guessing it’ll be when they play Oregon in week 2. That should probably shut them up for another 28 years.

None of these comments make any sense. Rivalry trash talk, period. Morris better get groomed now. Hoke doesn’t have much time left. Make it or break it year coming now. If Morris starts and they finish 7-5, Hoke will probably be persuasive enough to keep his job based on the risk he took starting a greenhorn. That same record with Gardner and the future looks much less promising. Michigan expects much more out of their football program and the last decade has been even worse than disappointing.
