Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner is running his way back in to the competition for the starting job this spring, literally. For the first time since injuring his foot in late November, Gardner is running on a treadmill.
Gardner posted to his Instagram account a video of his running on a treadmill while doing some rehab. The filter on it is unnecessary of course, but the image of a running Gardner has to be a positive sight for Michigan fans, especially with the brief glance in to the lens of the camera at the end. It’s so mesmerizing.
Gardner was second on the team in rushing in 2013 with 48 yards and 11 touchdowns. The season was supposed to see Michigan move to a more traditional style of offense following the graduation of Denard Robinson, but it became clear that when Gardner was free to use his legs to his advantage that thing seemed to work better for the Wolverines.
Gardner is expected to compete with Shane Morris this spring for the starting job in 2014. Gardner was the starting quarterback for Michigan in 2013, but Morris got a chance to show what he can do as the season once Gardner got banged up and missed the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl in Arizona. Morris completed 24 of 38 passes for 196 yards for the Wolverines in a loss to Kansas State. How much of the spring Gardner participates in is expected to be limited, which should give Morris more snaps to work with the offense.
