Mark Richt adds son to UGA football staff

Jon Richt

One thing better than a single Richt as part of your football program?  Having two of them, apparently.

Both then Athens Banner-Herald and Macon Telegraph reported Saturday that Georgia has confirmed Mark Richt has added his son, Jon Richt, to the UGA football staff.  Specifically, the younger Richt will serve as a volunteer quality control assistant under his father.

The key word there, though, is “volunteer.”  From the Telegraph:

There are Georgia state nepotism laws which prevent the hiring of family members, hence Jon Richt’s status as a volunteer under his father Mark, who will be entering his 14th season as head coach.

Jon Richt was a three-star member of Clemson’s 2008 recruiting class before transferring from the Tigers in March of 2009 to Mars Hill (N.C.) College to finish out his playing career.  The 24-year-old Richt took part in UGA’s Pro Day last March.

Makes me wonder, what’s going on with Jim Kelly’s nephew, Chad, at Clemson?

Kid was an absolute stud in NY high school football…thought he’d be something special.

Tajh Boyd is what happened to Chad Kelly. Then a torn ACL and then a top dual threat 5* named Deshaun Watson happened. Richt wasn’t going to sniff the field at Clemson. Kelly has a good chance at starting this year but will have to knock off Senior Cole Stoudt who has a rocket.

This has ‘loser’ written all over it, but time will tell. It turned out OK for Jay Paterno, didn’t it?

Quality Control? What is that, making sure the players don’t do anything idiotic? If so, the younger Richt may need an assistant or two. He gets a couple of years experience on the staff of a major college football program, and though unpaid, will certainly help him in the future. I hereby declare this situation, “un-loser” and think it a pretty good move.

Let’s face it. They are able to pay players under the table. Why not relatives?

Another item — Does Jon look as much like Helen Hunt as Mark does?

Helen Hunt? That is pretty funny even though I don’t see it. I wonder if Jon’s maternal grandfather has a great head of hair? If so, he may have a chance. Mark will be bald in five years.
