USC deletes video, apologizes after voice is heard bashing a Tennessee recruit

Von Pearson, Jakob Johnson AP

USC has deleted and apologized for a brief Instagram video that featured background audio — presumably of a Trojan coach — criticizing a recruit headed to Tennessee.

The deleted video from National Signing Day showed the name of Trojan recruit Lamont Simmons being added to USC’s list of signees, while a voice was heard off-camera saying: “Jalen Hurd is so soft and terrible. I don’t know why he (unintelligible).”

Hurd, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound running back, was rated a 5-star by Rivals.com and offered by dozens of schools.

Making things a bit more intriguing, Volunteer fans are speculating that the voice was that of famed UT quarterback Tee Martin, now an assistant at USC.

The Vols and Trojans don’t play anytime soon, but Hurd should still have plenty of motivation to prove his mystery detractor wrong in the seasons to come.

High profile schools such as USC are always under scrutiny by the sports press, whether friend or foe. So take all the negative reporting and bad mouthing by the haters, folks are making the case clearer and clearer everyday. With USC coming off schollie sanctions, the conferences are going to have to be ready for another decade of Trojan dominance. Our time is coming, and it’s coming sooner rather than later, sports fans.
So hang in there Trojan family and as always, Fight On.

Speculation from Vols was this was former Vols QB Tee Martin. He has somewhat fallen out of favor with Vols fans when he came to interview for Butch’s staff and then turned down the offer to come back home.

TN is the the Sec whipping boy.

“Famed UT quarterback Tee Martin” really? He does have a side street named after him but it’s not on the route of the Volwalk nor is the locker room complex named after him.

The coach assumed he was speaking in private – we’ve all called someone “terrible” out of frustration. Non-story

We’ve all see how Volvo fans think they’re going to be special. They are not. They are 2nd class Sec school.

    @ katman,
I am neither a Tennessee or SC fan but am a avid and objective fan of college football. You first get on here and extoll how great USC is and then send 2 more posts talking about how terrible Tennessee is. Hey cuz, according to the record books USC and Tennessee have won the same number of national championships in the last 20 years. So stick to rooting for your team versus running another team down. Especially when your team is a perennial poster boy for underachievement (pre season #1 and loses 5 games, never been done before in history). By the way, when was that first decade of Trojan dominance on the national scene that you referred to?

Hey noax… I’m not your cousin, as in cuz.

6’3″ 230lb 317 carries for 3,357 yards and 43 tds. He also runs a 4.3. Explain to me how that is terrible! Oh and my Vols didn’t even have to buy his mom a house to get him like USC did for Reggie Bush.

Seen Hurd and the kid can play. It’s unfortunately that audio was leaked but a coach calling a kid soft is nothing new- they have probably called some of their own players soft to their face.

  18. dkhhuey says: Feb 18, 2014 3:57 PM

I’m sorry – they said he was soft and terrible – I fail to see why that would warrant an apology! This is an opinion from somebody that is in the position to evaluate personnel to offer scholarships to and if the reason they didn’t offer was because they thought he was indeed soft and terrible – then so be it!

noaxetogrind- vols don’t have the same number of championships. USC has 11 championships and 6 heismans while vols have 6 championships and 0 heismans. USC is a great program and hopefully they will get back to winning after these unfair sanctions, see Miami’s slap in wrist sanctions.

Where did you get your “facts” to say that USC purchased a house for Bush’s family? You may want to turn to a different blog for your “facts.” It was an AGENT who hooked up the Bush family. Huge difference. Get your FACTS straight.

I bet half these USC fans don’t even have any ties to the school or the geographic area of USC just bandwagon fans of success under Pete Carroll. Let me guess your probably Yankee, Red Wing, and Heat fans too..What happened to Tennessee with trying to find the right coach and team suffering for it is the same for USC at this time. As you waste time getting the right coach, your teams will suffer and guess what? Oregon, UCLA, and Stanford are aging steam. Besides how would USC par in the SEC?
