Ex-Texas assistant added to LaTech staff

After spending nearly a decade in Texas, Oscar Giles will continue his collegiate coaching career a little further east.

Giles, Louisiana Tech announced in a press, has been hired by head coach Skip Holtz as his new defensive line coach. Giles replaces Stan Eggen, who left earlier this month for a job at Iowa State.

Giles had spent the previous nine seasons at Texas, where he was in charge of the Longhorn defensive ends. During his time at his alma mater -- he played there in the late eighties and early nineties -- Giles watched as two members of his unit staked their claim to the Ted Hendricks Award, given annually to the nation’s most outstanding defensive end.

Jackson Jeffcoat won the award following the 2013 season, while Brian Orakpo was the 2008 winner.

Following the hiring of Charlie Strong to replace Mack Brown, Giles was not retained.
