Scott Shafer shuffles, adds to ‘Cuse staff

Following a couple of departures this offseason, Scott Shafer has once again put the finishing touches on his coaching staff at Syracuse.

As previously reported, George McDonald has added the title of wide receivers coach to his offensive coordinator and associate head coach duties. Rob Moore, who coached receivers at his alma mater for one season, left earlier this month to reunite with former Orange head coach Doug Marrone with the Buffalo Bills.

Additionally, Shafer announced the hiring of Bobby Acosta as tight ends coach. Acosta has never been an assistant at the FBS level, with his most recent experience coming as the head coach at Widener College.

Most of Acosta’s coaching experience has been on the East Coast, a trait that was attractive to Shafer.

“Bobby is an extremely intelligent coach who understands east coast football and recruiting,” the coach said in a statement released by the school. “He has done an exemplary job developing a relationship with the coaches in New Jersey throughout his career. We welcome Bobby and [wife] Alicia to the Syracuse family.”

In addition to Moore, offensive line coach Pat Perles left the program for a job at the professional level, although in his case that pro level was the CFL. Perles was replaced by Joe Adam, who like Acosta has never been a paid assistant at the FBS level.
