Report: Duck Commander is new sponsor for Independence Bowl

duck dynasty AP

The Independence Bowl, known in recent years as the Avocare V100 Bowl, has a new sponsor.

The Shreveport-based bowl will be known as the Duck Commander Independence Bowl next season, according to a tweet on Sunday from ESPN’s Brett McMurphy. The naming rights will run for six years.

DuckCommander.com, of course, is the online home of the immensely popular A&E television series “Duck Dynasty”.

Recent controversy surrounding one of the stars of the show, Phil Robertson, will no doubt drive the narrative regarding this news.

Would this be the first television show to sponsor a bowl game? A precedent doesn’t spring to mind. It makes you wonder if we’ll soon be seeing the “Homeland Fiesta Bowl” or the “Dancing With the Stars Cotton Bowl”.

Stupid people buy a lot of stupid stuff.

“Duck Dynasty” is the A&E show. “Duck Commander” is the business run by the family. How is the show sponsoring the bowl? –> It makes you wonder if we’ll soon be seeing the “Homeland Fiesta Bowl” or the “Dancing With the Stars Cotton Bowl”.

There’s a lot of money to be made in stupidity if you’re smart enough.

I pretty much don’t turn the TV on except to watch a sporting event (or run a movie on the DVD player), so thanks to all the folks who watch that show (whatever it is) and helping to sell advertising. Some of that money has gone to sponsor a bowl game. Sometimes things work out semi-okay.

  4. Professor Fate says: Feb 23, 2014 4:25 PM

    Big-
If the family that is in that show is sponsoring the bowl game where do you think that kind of money came from? I don’t have any idea what the family business actually is (duck calls? decoys? instructional videos on how to avoid getting shot?) but I highly doubt they were making enough without that show to be sponsoring a college bowl game.

  5. classyjacklambert says: Feb 23, 2014 4:29 PM

Actually professor, they were pretty much 100 millionaires even before the show I think.

  6. overratedgators says: Feb 23, 2014 4:36 PM

I think Duck Dynasty, and the Robertsons’ bigoted views, are both stupid. But it’s no more controversial than Chik-Fil-A’s heavy advertising/sponsorship of college football. They’re just as bigoted; if one’s OK, then the other should be OK too.

  7. djshnooks says: Feb 23, 2014 5:39 PM

One less bowl game to watch.

    Who supports these redneck scumbags?!?

  8. amosalanzostagg says: Feb 23, 2014 5:45 PM

    Professor,

Buck Commander is owned by Willie Robertson and Duck Commander was founded by Phil Robertson and is now run by Willie Robertson. The Robertsons
run a tight ship and produce a magnificent product in their duck calls. Ancillary lines of fishing equipment and shot guns with the Duck Commander logo only. A&E is the one making money off their marketing of Duck Dynasty.

The Robertsons know their market and what their customers want, great products sold honestly

I guess bigotry is label only for people who disagree
with the PC notion that people of religion are hateful and want homosexuals and adulterers burned at the stake. They hate Sin,not the sinner,

    We’re all sinners.

How many posters actually hunt? Curious.

  10. tigerlou75 says: Feb 23, 2014 5:51 PM

Redneck scumbags? You’re right, they’re the bigots! Idiots! And Duck Commander isn’t the show you geniuses! It’s the business, they sell duck hunting equipment. Maybe you should learn to be as open minded and excepting as you think they should be

  11. earpaniac says: Feb 23, 2014 5:53 PM

I hunt, and have used Duck Commander calls for years. They make, IMO, the best calls on the market. They had more money than they knew what to do with even before the show.

  12. tigerlou75 says: Feb 23, 2014 5:59 PM

I hunt, as much as possible!

  13. huskersrock1 says: Feb 23, 2014 6:10 PM

    Libtards

Duck Commander is a company that sells hunting products.

Duck Dynasty is a reality show that stars the family that started and operate the company Duck Commander.

They are related but they are not one in the same.

  14. thefiesty1 says: Feb 23, 2014 6:16 PM

I think they should go back to the Poulan Weed Eater Independence Bowl. It just had a certain ring to it.

  15. chat1776 says: Feb 23, 2014 7:02 PM

    Love it.

  16. mrlaloosh says: Feb 23, 2014 7:10 PM

Oh no! Thar mean Duck guy is sponsoring a bowl! What to do! I’m just flabbergasted! You people are idiots. I’m bigoted against morons and I have my pick on these boards.

  17. onbucky96 says: Feb 23, 2014 7:20 PM

Could they rename it The Good ‘Ole ‘Merican Bowl? Freaking hillbillies.

  18. jaredwt13 says: Feb 23, 2014 9:19 PM

“Would this be the first television show to sponsor a bowl game?” No, it wouldn’t. The bowl game isn’t named after the TV show. It’s named after Duck Commander, the duck call company that precedes the show by many years.

  19. keltictim says: Feb 23, 2014 9:48 PM

I hunt as much as my family and business will allow. Just not ducks. I only hunt with a bow and it’s darn tricky to hit a duck with an arrow. Not a gator though, that us just plain fun, and delicious. The Robertsons are extremely well respected in the hunting community, and if they wanna make a butt load of dough acting silly on tv, well have at it. The ratings don’t lie a good chunk of America enjoys them. To the above dummy, I do believe ‘merica is a hip hop term not a hillbilly term, and besides that they are rednecks, hillbillies come from Appalachia country. Google a map if you can’t tell the difference.

I found the comment about Phil completely unnecessary. That died out long ago. He said being gay was a sin. He didn’t say gay people were subhuman or something. I support gay rights, but I also support those who disagree due to religious beliefs. He also said he worked beside blacks and those blacks were happy, he didn’t say all blacks were. The media blew it way out of proportion, shocking. By the way, Willie has an adopted black child. It’s funny those who disagree are “bigots.”

  21. normtide says: Feb 24, 2014 1:50 AM

Overrated, onbucky, and a few others- So people should be themselves and others should accept them, unless YOU disagree with who they are? Sounds to me like you are a hate group. How are you any different than the KKK, skin heads, or that church in Kansas? The Robertson’s and Cathy’s (Chic-fil-a) only stated they disagree with homosexuality, neither mentioned hating them. You brought up the word hate, you used insults, you you used epitaphs. Not them.

I too disagree with homosexuality. I don’t hate gays. I really don’t care what anyone else does, as long as they don’t hurt anyone else. I simply avoid it and go my own way. Maybe you should do the same with these two families. You know, take the enlightened road. Start practicing what you preach, because you sound like the bigots in this situation.

And for the record, I haven’t watched their show since the first season. Not much on watching tv and nothing on the show I can’t see in real life around here. I prefer sports, history, and documentaries. Not reality shows or sitcoms.

Let the bleeding heart liberals begin their whining.

  23. dhardy8207 says: Feb 24, 2014 9:35 AM

Tolerance works both ways! Strange that if one says they are against or want no part of homosexuality they are automatically accused of being bigots, racist, etc. However one admits their a Christian, catholic, muslim, etc., their automatically tagged as a “religious freak”.. The Constitution guarantees that citizens will be free of religious persecution and be free to practice the religion of their choice or not at all. Quite frankly, I m tired of those that don’t practice religion persecuting those of us that do.

There is to be seperation of Church and State, so if you elect a representative that is religious then you’re allowing his/her beliefs to come in to play when they vote on laws that govern this country. Everyone should be free to practice the religion of their choice, and those that choose not to should also have that choice.

I don’t hate gay people, I have several friends that are and what they do and who they love is not my business, but if someone ask me how I feel about homosexuality and I voice that its not for me then those same friends should respect my stance on that and they do, thats how we remain friends. MUTUAL RESPECT!!

Thy pick leftists who call them hillbillies and bigots. Anyone who doesn’t agree with leftists are bigots. Personally I think anyone who uses the word bigot are actually the intolerant and bigots.

  25. mogogo1 says: Feb 24, 2014 11:38 AM

Hey, at least you know the Duck Dynasty folks will enjoy themselves and both their show and product are available nationally.

Many of those bowl sponsorships are nothing more than ego trips for CEOs. Belk has a bowl and has no stores in like the top 5 national TV markets.

  26. eightysixisback says: Feb 24, 2014 11:52 AM

some of you people need to actually read the bible if you are going to use to justify your beliefs. it says in the bible about 100 times that it is not man’s place to judge other men, only god is supposed to do that. according to christianity you arent supposed to speak out about who the sinners are and if you do you are sinning.

Will it be shortened to the BIGOT BOWL?

  29. fsu01 says: Feb 24, 2014 7:59 PM

“Having or revealing an obstinate belief in the superiority of one’s own opinions and a prejudiced intolerance of the opinions of others.” This the definition of bigoted.

A bigot is “someone who is bigoted.”

Having quoted these definitions from dictionary.com I would say that this is something we have all been guilty of from time to time.

So I will say people who like to throw around the word bigot who are not applying it to themselves are in fact hypocrites. Another concept we are all guilty of violating from time to time.

  30. packerbadger says: Feb 27, 2014 1:47 PM

They’d be better off sponsoring the “Teabag Bowl” or the “Hate Bowl” or the “Uneducated Bowl”…….$ECheat teams would be a natural fit!!
