Accident leaves Utah DL Moana Ofahengaue critical

Moana Ofahengaue

While there was good news on the medical front for Utah’s starting quarterback, it was decidedly the opposite for a player on the other side of the ball.

Moana Ofahengaue, the school confirmed, is listed in critical condition following what was described as a motorbike accident Sunday night.  The school did not release any details of the accident.

The defensive lineman, whose uncle, Kalani Sitake, is the Utes’ defensive coordinator, is listed in critical condition with what a press release described as a “serious head injury.”

The good news, though, is “that family members are extremely optimistic about his recovery,” the release stated.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Moana and his family during this very difficult time,” said Utah coach Kyle Whittingham in a statement. “He is a beloved member of our team and we will support him in his recovery in any way we can.”

The son of former BYU football player Tevita Ofahengaue, Ofahengaue joined the Utes as a walk-on in 2013 after signing with the Utes as part of the Class of 2012.
