Utah adds Oklahoma transfer QB to spring battle

Utah has announced that quarterback Kendal Thompson has officially joined the Utes football program. Thompson transferred to the Pac 12 school from Oklahoma.

According to Rivals.com, Thompson was a three-star dual-threat quarterback in the Class of 2011 for the Sooners. The Oklahoma native played in two games for the Sooners last season. In late January it was reported Thompson was going to transfer to a new school, which makes plenty of sense considering where he would have been sitting on the depth chart heading in to 2014. Trevor Knight is going to be Oklahoma’s starting quarterback in 2014, and Blake Bell is still on the roster and perhaps the likely alternative if needed.

At Utah, Thompson will enter a quarterback competition from the start. The Utes lacked much stability at the position in 2013. Travis Wilson struggled last season with 16 touchdowns to 16 interceptions in nine games. Wilson has recently been cleared to return to the program this spring, which is great news, but his performance on the field is far from making him a clear-cut leader for the starting job in 2014.

Utah was the first place Thompson checked out once making the decision to transfer.
