Michael Brewer says he’s transferring to Hokies

A weekend visit has turned into a quarterback commitment for Virginia Tech.

Michael Brewer confirmed early Sunday afternoon to the Roanoke TimesAndy Bitter that he has decided to transfer to Tech and continue his playing career with the Hokies.  Clemson and an unnamed SEC school were reportedly of interest as well.

In somewhat of a surprising twist, Brewer told Bitter that he had narrowed his choices to either Tech or Kentucky.  The latter had not previously been mentioned as a potential landing spot, and it’s unclear if Brewer made a visit to the Wildcats.

I ended up liking everything about it,” the quarterback told the Times of his visit to Blacksburg. “The coaching staff was a big part of it. I really enjoyed getting to know them.

Brewer also confirmed his decision via Twitter.

In-mid January, Brewer announced that he would be transferring from Texas Tech after graduating this coming May.  Brewer wanted to transfer to either Texas or TCU but was denied a release to those Big 12 schools, leading to a very messy and public brouhaha between the two sides.

Because he will be a graduate transfer, Brewer will be eligible to play immediately in 2014 if he lands with an FBS program.  He’ll also have two seasons of eligibility remaining beginning this year.

The Hokies are looking to replace longtime starter Logan Thomas, and junior Mark Leal, who served as Thomas’ backup the past two seasons, will enter spring practice the favorite to win the Hokies’ starting job.  Brewer will not participate in spring practice and won’t join the quarterback fray in Blacksburg until this summer.
