Wake Forest receives $7.5 million donation for football upgrades

Wake Forest received another healthy donation to support future growth of the football program. On Wednesday Wake Forest announced a donation of $7.5 million to go toward the school’s athletics department.

The donation comes from alum Bob McCreary, a former Wake Forest football player. McCreary currently owns a furniture company. The money will help to fund the construction of a 95,000 square-foot sports performance center that will serve as the new home of the entire football program. The new building will house a strength and conditioning facility for athletes of all sports at Wake Forest, football offices, team meeting rooms and other amenities the school hopes will give recruiting sales pitches a little more to soak in.

According to Wake Forest, McCreary has donated more than $15 million back to the university over the years.

“Bob came to Wake Forest in 1957 on a football scholarship, and he has never forgotten the power of a transformative gift on a young student-athlete,” said Wake Forest president Nathan O. Hatch. “Bob personifies the success brought by hard work and dedication and the generosity inspired by passion and Pro Humanitate. We appreciate his magnificent gift to the sports performance center, which will enable future generations of student-athletes to compete at the highest levels.”

Wake Forest received a $2 million donation in February to help the school raise funds for the same goals. The university claims to have raised $12.5 million since introducing the fundraising effort last October. Since head coach Dave Clawson was hired, an estimated $10 million has been raised according to the university.
