An incident a week or so after signing day won’t keep one of the most highly-rated members of Auburn’s 2014 class out of the program. It will, however, put him squarely underneath his head coach’s microscope.
After a month’s worth of speculation, Gus Malzahn confirmed Monday that Kalvaraz Bessent will be permitted to enroll at the university this summer and will be a part of the Tigers football team. The cornerback was charged with two counts of felony possession of marijuana in early February, but those charges were ultimately dropped roughly a week later.
Malzahn indicated Bessent’s initial time on The Plains will be under “a probationary status.”
“Kalvaraz will be coming in,” the coach said according to al.com. “He will be on a probationary status when he gets here, but he will be coming in with the other signees.”
For his part, the player was grateful for the opportunity after going through what he described as a “lil test.”

Bessent was one of the highest-rated pieces of AU’s defensive recruiting puzzle, given a four-star nod by Rivals. The recruiting service had the Kingsland, Ga., product rated as the No. 12 corner in the country and the No. 13 player at any position in the state of Georgia.
