Tray Matthews one of four UGA players charged with theft

The day before he kicks off yet another spring practice at Georgia, Mark Richt has yet another off-field incident with which to deal.

The Macon Telegraph‘s Seth Emerson reported overnight that four Bulldog football players were arrested on at least two counts each of theft by deception.  Wide receiver Uriah LeMay led the quartet with four counts, followed by defensive back Tray Matthews (three) and defensive lineman John Taylor (no relation) and defensive end James DeLoach with two apiece.

To make matters worse, the alleged victim in this case is the UGA athletic department, the police chief confirmed to the Telegraph.  As far as the particular crimes that led to the off-field issues, Emerson wrote that “[t]he players are charged with what amounts to double-dipping: Each allegedly took normal stipend checks from UGA and deposited them via a mobile app, and then also cashed them somewhere else.”

Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald tweeted that it was the university that reported the case to the police.  Because stipends were involved, Weiszer said, there was a fear that NCAA compliance issues could arise if it was left unreported.

Weiszer is also reporting that LeMay had taken a stipend check that was discarded by a roommate, also an UGA athlete, and cashed it.

There were a total of 11 checks involved, with the total value coming out to $786.50.

“I’m aware of the situation and it will be handled in an appropriate way,” Richt said in a statement.

All four players were released on a $1,500 bond per charge.

Matthews is by far the most notable name in the group.  Despite being limited by a hamstring issue for the early part of the season, Matthews started six games at safety as a true freshman in 2013.

Taylor played in 10 games last season while DeLoach has played in 18 the past two seasons.  LeMay took a redshirt in 2013.

Now thats called “biting the hand that feeds you”… How stupid! Did they not think that cashing a check/checks twice would go unnoticed? Its called a “paper trail” dumb arses!!

I thought a bank would actually verify funds before they “cashed” a check?

    Guess not.

The good ole SEC. The conference where rapist, thieves, criminals, and assailants get rewarded with free education (albeit a lousy one) and a chance to play in the NFL.

Kick all of them, out of school !

It would be refreshing to see a school actually act like an institution of higher learning and demand more from its students. But here is whats going to happen they may kick the no names off the team, but the Safety that’s another story. Richt will no doubt give him another chance. Criminals are OK if they help you win. I would love to see an arrest by conference breakdown, something the SEC would defiantly dominate!

Well Well, one of the infamous trolls of CFT is back. Strange you didn’t post this tripe on the previous thread about a Wisconsin player accused of sexual assaul. Or the one posted last week about the Wazzu players arrested for theft. Or any of the many post over the past month that involve players with legal issues outside the SEC…

Hating and trolling at its finest!

Hi. My name is rabbi187 and I’m a tool. I have keyboard muscles and always make fun of the SEC. Get out of your mom’s basement dude and wake up. It happens all over the country.

UGA is one of the very few schools where players are held accountable.

Richt has a very strict three strike policy and it doesn’t matter who you are.

Josh Harvey-Clemons, the best player on UGA’s defense, a 5 star recruit and the #32 prospect in the country was kicked off the team early this winter for using up his chances.

Two years before, Richt kicked his starting RB, a 5 star and also a top 50 prospect for his third strike.

Both were kicked off the team after their true freshman year.

Please don’t confuse Coach Richt with a slime ball like Slurrier from SC.

Now for 400+ pound failed native American singer with a dozen screen names to add nothing to the conversation, but the compulsion to insult me.

Josh Harvey-Clemons was also our best volleyball player, (see last year’s Auburn game).
Wasn’t Matthews the other DB that made sure that overthrown pass didn’t hit the ground until the Auburn player could catch it? (Yes, I’m over it as you can obviously see, not).

    @jonkybon:

Thanks for reminding me about these typical SEC turds, they were all REPEAT offenders who forced there coaches hand. All were given numerous chances. Buy the way thanks for proving my point also.

Actually i am a Saban fan, and i don’t look past all of the SEC’s success. Still facts are what they are. And yes i am a WVU fan!

Now both LeMay brothers have spent time in handcuffs. How long until Uriah bails on the team like Christian did? I’m sure they’re “good kids” though. I hope Benjamin learns from the mistakes of his older siblings.

Regardless of what a particular poster says, jonkybon, Georgia is no different that any other university. They all have problems with athletes from time to time. Just going to a particular university does not preclude athletes from finding trouble. I think everyone deserves a second chance. I’m sure these young men will learn their lesson and hopefully move on.

The Lemays were trouble before they got to UGA. This is what you get when you accept morons. I am
sure M. Richt will put them on the three strikes and you are out program. At least that is better than Slurrier’s.

JT – the link from the front page to this article references Auburn players being suspended instead of UGA players.

Spurrier was right again!! Looks like some more Dawgs absent for the early game with South Carolina

Why all the hate? Isn’t a nanny-nanny-boo-boo or two enough? You guys lighten up, please. (sees Saban on TV, gives him the finger)

Four $ECheat players at one time! Niiiiice! A couple other $ECheat players in the headlines as well! Wheres that auburntiger dude? If the $ECheat couldn’t get away with the good ol’ boy corruption and actually made their players go to class, they wouldn’t be able to collectively field one team in the $ECheat!!

Btw wvu guy, thanks for the facts! dhardly has a hard time choking those down! lol!

  22. onlyoneleft says: Mar 20, 2014 8:40 PM

Hey John Taylor, Albarn has enough trouble without NBC putting the headline under CollegeFootball “Auburn suspends 4″. You click on it and it is UGA.

No, I have a hard time tolerating bigotry, lack of intellectual substance on an adult forum, childish name calling and stereotyping; which should more than explain the many reasons I detest you.

You however have a hard time distinguishing facts from your opinion. Which would also explain why you never post anything of value or examples of cognitive thinking skills.
