Cal player won’t face charges for injuring teammate

Nearly five months after being involved in a locker-room altercation that hospitalized a teammate, a “mystery” Cal football player has escaped any type of legal consequences stemming from the incident.

According to the Santa Cruz Sentinel, the unidentified Golden Bear “will not face criminal charges as long as he satisfies sanctions imposed by the university.” The player’s attorney, Darryl Stallworth, confirmed that no charges would be filed but declined to detail the specifics of the university’s sanctions.

Should the unnamed player find himself in any type of additional legal hot water, however, the paper writes that the district attorney “still has a window of up to one year to file misdemeanor charges and three years to file felony charges” relating to the locker-room incident.

Freshman walk-on running back Fabiano Hale suffered a concussion and required stitches in his ear as a result of the early-November post-practice scuffle. “Player X” was determined to be the instigator in the fight that left Hale hospitalized for a couple of days.

That player was suspended indefinitely by the university, while Hale remains a part of Sonny Dykes’ football program.

“We don’t want to ruin the other player’s life, we just want him to be accountable for his actions,” Solange Hale told the Sentinel. “Fabiano is doing well and working hard to earn a spot on the team. It is just unfortunate that this happened and that Fabiano has to live with the trauma of being assaulted.”
