Starting Auburn DE likely out for the spring

LaDarius Owens AP

When Auburn kicked off spring practice last Tuesday, LaDarius Owens wasn’t on the field.  The way it stands now, the starting defensive end won’t be on it the remainder of the spring either.

Owens underwent surgery earlier in the offseason to correct an issue in one of his feet.  As a result of the subsequent rehab, head coach Gus Malzahn does not expect the senior back for any part of the remainder of the 16 spring practice sessions.

Because of Owens’ experience, however, Malzahn’s not concerned over his absence.

“At this time, probably not,” Malzahn said when asked about Owens’ availability for the rest of the spring. “He’s a veteran guy, though. We kind of know what we’re getting with him. (It’ll) give these other guys a chance.”

Owens started 12 games during the Tigers’ run to the BCS championship game.  He had five tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in 2013.
