Hoosier WR who nearly drowned expected to take part in camp

The news keeps getting better and better for Isaac Griffith.

Less than a week after he nearly drowned and, as a precautionary measure, was placed in a medically-induced coma, the Indiana wide receiver was sent home to Indiana from the Florida hospital Sunday. Tuesday, Griffith’s head coach indicated that the player is expected to be able to resume his playing career, perhaps as early as voluntary summer workouts a handful of months down the road.

“It looks like, in time, he’ll make a complete recovery,” Kevin Wilson told the Indianapolis Star. “Not only a normal lifestyle, but I think a normal athletic lifestyle where he can participate and play. I know he wants to get back to normal and play as soon as he can.”

Suffice to say, Griffith will not, barring further miracles, participate in spring practice. He could, though, rejoin his teammates this summer and is expected to participate from the start of summer camp.

At home now, Griffith will resume classes at IU next week.

Griffith was hospitalized a week ago Monday after nearly drowning when he got caught up in a rip tide while swimming during a spring break trip to Florida. Were it not for the heroics of a friend, Griffith could very well have drowned, an incident report from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office stated.

Griffith was a three-star member of the Hoosiers’ 2013 recruiting class coming out of high school in Fort Wayne., Ind. He took a redshirt his true freshman season.
