Kliff Kingsbury could play a series in Texas Tech spring game

Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury does not have any NCAA eligibility left to use, but that will not stop him from potentially taking some snaps for a series in Texas Tech’s upcoming spring game. The shallow depth at the quarterback position could be inspiring the decision as well.

Davis Webb entered the spring as the expected number one candidate for the starting job in the fall. He is the only quarterback on the spring roster for the Red Raiders. Texas Tech added three-star quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the most recent recruiting class, but he will not join the team until the summer. Baker Mayfield and Michael Brewer left the Texas Tech program this offseason. Help is on the way next year though. Texas Tech has landed the verbal commitment of Jarrett Stidham, a four-star quarterback and top dual-threat quarterback in the nation according to Rivals.

At the very least, this is certainly a unique way to generate some buzz about the Red Raiders. You certainly will not see many coaches even contemplating the idea of lining up on the field and taking some plays. Think about it. How many coaches would be in shape to take some reps at their old college positions in a spring game? The list probably starts and ends with Kingsbury, right?

The idea is actually kind of brilliant as well. For Kingsbury, it gives him a chance to put himself in the shoes of his quarterback and see exactly that player has been looking at during practices. The game may have evolved in some ways since Kingsbury last played, but the style of offense Kingsbury is implementing is something he is very familiar with. Finding new ways to get a feel for what his players are seeing and dealing with could give him a little perspective and a way of relating more one-on-one with his quarterbacks and other players.
