Michigan will wrap up spring practices with their annual spring game in Michigan Stadium later today. Wolverine fans attending the spring game will get a chance to stop in the renovated Towsley Museum and Schembechler Hall, which now features a life-size statue of one of college football’s most iconic coaches, Bo Schembechler.

The statue of Schembechler greets fans on the outside of the museum’s entrance and depicts the legendary Michigan coach in his usual Saturday sideline look. The statue reads the slogan that has become synonymous with Michigan’s football program, “Those who stay will be champions.”

Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon calls the statue the new “centerpiece of the renovation” in his blog.

“The statue was created to give people a sense of Bo pacing the sidelines, leading his team, and now leading everyone on a walk through time and into the future of this football program,” Brandon says. “The statue can’t walk or talk, but it can remind us every day of Bo and his philosophy of how to continue to grow our tradition and keep Michigan great.”

    No truth to the rumor that the statue already lost a Rose Bowl.

    I’ll always remember him as the dirtbag that fired Ernie Harwell

    Good of the Wolverines to honor an Ohioan in this manner. Maybe tOSU will put a statue of a car in front of the Shoe to represent contributions from the people of MI.

    Nicely done – classy way to recognize a man who contributed much to both Michigan and OSU… and fanning the flames of ‘The’ rivalry.

    Why is the statue 50 lbs lighter than Bo actually was?

    How many National Championships did Bo’s team win?

    {rhetorical question}

    You can’t even think of the OSU / TTUN rivalry without Bo! He was a great man that helped ignite The Game into a raging fire! Watching him and Woody prowl and growl on the sidelines during that ridiculously heated game is just plain awesome! Kudos to the UofM for this move!
