Maryland will have a commemorative Big Ten ice cream flavor

There may be no better snack in the middle of the summer than a nice batch of ice cream in a bowl or in a cone. Fans of Maryland will get to have a specially designed Big Ten flavor to consume on July 1 as part of a celebration. More on that in a minute.

Maryland will officially become a member of the Big Ten on July 1, 2014 (as will Rutgers). Plans for the celebration are still coming but The Baltimore Sun provided a preview of some of the plans in store for the university, ranging from the official launch of an advertising campaign to special events such as a Big Ten Night at Nationals Park, home of baseball’s Washington Nationals. Fans of the New York Yankees may have already noticed Big Ten advertising during baseball games behind home plate. The Big Ten will participate in the Pinstripe Bowl in Yankee Stadium starting in the 2014 season (plus that whole Rutgers and New York City market thing).

The Baltimore Sun also reports Maryland has a special ice cream flavor coming that will be unveiled on campus on July 1. That seems fitting considering the dairy states in the conference’s foot print and Penn State is known for their ice cream. So what kind of flavors could Maryland have in the mixing bowl? Perhaps a crab-flavored ice cream?

Maryland will be place din the Big Ten’s east division. Rutgers will join them along with Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan, Penn State and Indiana.
