Al Golden leaving door open for QB transfer options

Florida v Miami

Miami head coach Al Golden says the Hurricanes are more than willing to evaluate various quarterback options by way of transfers, but if the season started this week he feels he has a starter in Kevin Olsen.

“This time of year we always have our eyes open,” Golden said during an ACC coaches conference call Wednesday when asked about the possibility of adding a transfer quarterback to the roster before the fall. Golden said he could not comment on specific names he and his staff may be interested in, due to NCAA rules of course, but Golden’s reluctance to say the quarterback situation is solved was pretty much telling the story.

Ryan Williams suffered an ACL injury during the spring practice schedule that required surgery to repair. Williams was thought to be the likely started heading into the fall, but now he will focus on rehab instead. During the conference call Wednesday, Golden stated Olsen would likely be the starting quarterback to lead the Hurricanes on offense if the decision had to be made right now.

Olsen was given a redshirt season as a freshman in 2013, so he has not seen any playing time since committing to Miami. He brings plenty of potential to the field though a sa highly-rated recruit out of high school. Considered one of the top pro-style quarterbacks from the Class of 2012, Olsen could jump into the starting role this season and help build the foundation for the offense for years to come if all goes well.

Golden said what any coach would probably say in suggesting the staff and team will be comfortable with whoever ends up lining up under center in the fall. Miami opens the 2014 season on the road at Louisville, the first ACC game for the Cardinals.

What a glowing endorsement for Olsen. Good job Al, way to shatter the guys confidence. Bring back Butch.

Yeah, how dare he try to light a fire under Olsen’s a$$. I mean after all, Olsen was so motivated that he had to be called out publicly by AG and have his family intervene to get his act together. And of course the cherry on top was the bowl game suspension. Sounds like a self motivated QB! If he took his freshman year seriously, he’d be miles ahead in the competition at this point.

If you hate AG go for it, but asking for Butch because AG is creating competition is ridiculous. It’s a tradition that Miami started a long time ago. No one gives a sh!t if his feelings are hurt.

What a joke! Are you really trying to rationalize Golden saying he’s open to transfer QB’s as a motivational tool! I hope you all keep this coach for a long long long time….

Since when do the canes still play football? Really they have a team. I thought they disbanded the team and went into the lingerie football league and finished 5-7

I wanted AG gone long before this. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a good recruiter. But he’s a horrible game day coach. He needs to go. Butch was the last good coach we had and he’s available… why shouldn’t we be asking for him back?

Getting Butch back is nothing but a dream of some desperate fans. And if you know Canes history you’d know that Butch was a bad gameday coach too.

The point is, this is not AG’s issue. It’s Olsen’s fault that he is behind. I like what AG has done on the “waiver wire”. If we didn’t pluck a few of those guys last year the defense might have ranked dead last. Williams was a waiver wire guy and he looked pretty good before the ACL.

Golden gets one more year with me. I’m not a fan but he’s here and has “his guys” playing in his scheme. If we suck again, there are no more excuses.

Ok bonerchamp, who do you recommend bringing in next year if we suck again?

I’d be willing to bet that it’s not going to be Butch! Even though he was exonerated in the UNC case he’s still tainted and Donna is not bringing someone with baggage in. Plus there is still a lot of hurt feelings for the way he left. Ain’t happening.

I don’t know who would be brought in but I can tell you this, the list will be better than Golden and Edsell. Whether you like the Golden or not, he’s got the program on the right track and very healthy unlike when he took it over. He’s put the proper systems in place and it would be a smooth transition.

That being said, I really don’t think Donna would fire him this year. I think AG has 2-3 more years here unless there is a total meltdown and I don’t see that happening with 2015 looking like our best team (on paper) since 2003.

Still cant believe that everytime I read peoples opinions, they want AG gone. I love what he does for this program! None of you must realize what firing him would do… break off most recruiting ties, install a new system, whole new coaching staff, that takes a toll and gives us at least two mediocre years… I have had enough of that over the last decade! So hes pushing Olsen, GOOD, not a big fan of Olsen, while I think he has good tools and skills, everything seems to be pointing to him being unstable upstairs. I would love to see Crow given a serious look or even Kaaya who is the best of the bunch (IMO). All I know is whoever is throwing the ball has a ton of weapons around him and a 3 or 4 headed monster running game to support this year. Whoever is QB just needs to be Brad Johnson or Trent Dilfer and just not do anything to make us lose!
