Utah fight song might get new lyrics

Students at most universities likely know the words to the fight song more than they do the alma mater. Now the students at Utah may have to re-learn some of the words to the fight song.

Earlier this week student government organizations at Utah voted in favor of changing lyrics to the school fight song that some deemed offensive. The changes are not official yet, but now are likely to be approved. This should come as little surprise, as the lyrics were written in 1904 and declare those singing to be a Utah Man. The changes are minor and will not require a brand new composition and sheet music, but the proposed changes will help bring the fight song into a more politically correct state in the 21st century.

The line that sings “Our coeds are the finest” has been considered sexist and racist by some and the university is now prepared to modify that specific line to avoid any problems. One of the possible changes to the line could read “our students are the brightest,” according to The Desert News. Any reference to “Utah man” could easily be switched to “Utah fan” without disrupting the fight song’s theme or rhymes.

“I don’t want to get rid of tradition, I love tradition, I just want a more inclusive tradition,” said student body president Sam Ortiz, who sponsored the measure, as quoted by The Salt Lake Tribune. “I’m incredibly happy that our student leaders stepped up and made a difficult decision.”

What other fight songs could be in need of a 21st century jump in political correctness?

“The line that sings “Our coeds are the finest” has been considered sexist and racist by some…”

Ridiculous as this PC garbage is, I can understand why some are calling this sexist. But racist?? C’mon!

How about the Aggies “sawing off Bevo’s horns” when they don’t even play them anymore. Doesn’t quite work when your playing Ole Miss, LSU or Alabama.

Omg please leave their traditions alone. How does every progressive feel like everything out there is offensive. If I was an alumni I would be sick. Te fight song is for students and alumns. Since 1904 the women graduates of Utah have turned out ok being called the finest. I can’t see why this matters. Also isn’t their mascot a man? Probably why is Utah man lol.

I’m offended by the name “Utah”. Shouldn’t it be “WEtah”? The “U” in “Utah” is code for “you people”, is clearly racist, and I demand that it be changed to a name of my liking.

the “gang” of men will be ready to take on the enemy??..
hmmm, seems like code identification to me. Where are the PC police when you need them!!

This baffles me. The word “fine” means “of high quality”. So the song is saying their coeds are of the highest quality. How is that offensive or sexist exactly?

And how is the term “Utah Man” racist?

We’ve clearly lost our minds as a society.

Sam Ortiz is a moron that wanted to leave his stain on the U before he left. He had 4 years to try and change the lyrics, but did it the day before he left for good.

More liberal pussies trying to change the way others want to live thier lives do the things they want to do, just because these libs don’t like it.

If you don’t like it, don’t do it, change the channel, buy something else, don’t participate…. but don’t interfere with what others, who are happy with the way things are.

The problem with liberals is that once you acquiesce to their demands, they’re not happy, and will want more and more…..
