Nearly three weeks after Chad Kelly was summarily dismissed from the program, Clemson has reportedly attempted to fill the numbers void at the quarterback position -- with a little local twist.
David Olson confirmed to The State Wednesday that he has decided to transfer to Clemson and continue his playing career with the Tigers. Olson, a Columbia, SC, native, had spent the past four seasons at Stanford, mainly as a scout team quarterback.
“I’m happy to be home and going to Clemson,” the player told his hometown paper. “My family is going to have a chance to watch me play. I looked at a number of places. This visit to Clemson, everything felt right about it and it’s a pretty good situation to come into. I’m excited to be a part of the Clemson program and family. There were a lot of good things I couldn’t pass up.”
Because he’s already received a degree from Stanford, Olson would be eligible to play immediately in 2014.
Olson was a three-star member of the Cardinal’s 2010 recruiting class, taking a redshirt as a true freshman. He appeared in exactly one game -- a Sept. 28 win over Washington State last year -- although he’s yet to throw a pass at the collegiate level.
With Kelly’s departure, it left Cole Stoudt as the starter and DeShaun Watson, who missed a sizable portion of spring practice due to a cracked collarbone, as his backup. Stoudt served as Tajh Boyd‘s primary backup the past three years while Watson was a member of Clemson’s 2014 recruiting class as an early enrollee.
The only other quarterback of note currently on the Tigers roster is sophomore walk-on Nick Schuessler.
