Missouri’s Michael Sam receives congrats from Obama

Michael Sam

There may never be a final day of the NFL Draft as memorable or historical as the 2014 edition. Missouri defensive end Michael Sam, the 2013 SEC Defensive Player of the Year, became the first openly gay football player to be drafted by an NFL team when the St. Louis Rams used one of their final two picks to draft him. It was a proud moment for humanity and equality, and it was not a moment that went unnoticed by President Barack Obama.

“The President congratulates Michael Sam, the Rams and the NFL for taking an important step forward in our Nation’s journey,” a White House statement said, according to USA Today.¬†“From the playing field to the corporate boardroom, LGBT Americans prove everyday that you should be judged by what you do and not who you are,”

There is no telling just what comes next for Sam with the Rams. St. Louis has a loaded defensive line. In addition to drafting Sam, the Rams also drafted Pittsburgh defensive tackle Aaron Donald and the defensive end position looks to be locked down with Chris Long and Robert Quinn on each side. Seventh-round draft picks typically have a difficult time making an NFL roster right away anyway, especially when playing a position that looks to be pretty stable heading into training camp, but the situation just feels right for Sam and the Rams and head coach Jeff Fisher seems committed to seeing this through as far as he can take it.

As for the college game, Sam’s monumental steps will hopefully help others facing a similar position that it is possible to be openly gay without the fear of one day being shut out by the NFL. The story is still being written of course, but Sam’s tale at Missouri is one worth learning from.

Yes yes, getting selected at the bottom of the seventh round, after goodell sent out a letter urging teams to take him, is quite the accomplishment.

Remind me again how often 7th rounders make the league as anything but special teamers?

Well, not for nothing but Tom Brady was drafted in the 6th. Talent does exist in those lower rounds it’s just harder to find, and they are not gonna be game ready on day 1. It would sure be awesome if we didn’t identify Sam as a homosexual anymore, and just referred to him as a football player. It’s over , the barriers been broken, from now one I truly hope everyone is just referred too as football players not any other kind of identifying thing

The barrier had already BEEN broken in every locker room at some point. But, some people believe that their sexual preferences are their own business…

In 2011, there were two gays on the Falcons. I know somebody in the front office and it wasn’t a secret. EVERYBODY in the organization knew but nobody cared…

The media are always looking for ways to drive their agenda down throats. Next, they’ll be sniffing around trying to find bigotry through analyzing every move made by the team. Lovely.

“It was a proud moment for humanity and equality”.

wonder how long he will last.

Just remember, Kev – you and your pals (notice I didn’t say journalists) are the ones who have made a big deal out of this.

Did Obama congratulate any other draft picks?

  6. spunhead73 says: May 11, 2014 1:21 PM

Sad day for the NFL and the Rams players who have to deal with a gay teammate.

Is Florio writing CFB blogs now?

Obama chimes in on everything…most annoying president ever. And yes, don’t scream liberals, I am a conservative so I find him that much more annoying. He is like a rock star….still can’t believe he was reelected, stinkin’ rock star. So much for our economy…..blah blah blah i am getting side tracked.

I hope all NFL players respond with a huge who cares. This is sports, this story is for politicians and journalists. Let them blabber.

Those FSU fans like myself are wondering why Christian Jones & James Wilder Jr. were not drafted….that is news.

They will both be better than Sam. Just saying.

Go Noles!!! ACC once again had a great draft. Who knocked off SEC when given the chance finally?!?!? The ACC. Our lower teir teams don’t have the history so we don’t get the love. But we are easily the second best league in NCAA football, if not the best.

That is so funny, I wondered that too. I had to stop reading PFT because I felt like I was at a political convention half the time. Florio is prepping for a political career I think. LOL!

I appreciate CFT keeping us informed about football as a priority.

Be judged on what you do… Not who you are…
I could care less who is gay and who isn’t … But the
Freaking LGTB people and our loser POTUS continuously shoving the idea of “who you are ” down our throats being more important is enough to drive people crazy!!

I hear the rams were given a 3rd round pick by Goodell for taking him.

I also hear teams were Jockeying for the last pick because had he been taken as Mr. irrelevant it was going to be a 1st rounder.

I’m just glad he’s not on my team. Disgusting!

  12. bigdawg24 says: May 11, 2014 4:20 PM

What about the 255 other draft picks?

BTW: Great job on rolling out that Affordable Health Care website, Benghazi, shrinking the Armed Forces when Russia is showing aggression, etc.

    4 brave Americans died

    Obama and Hillary lied

    & the corrupt media complied

  14. goodfieldnohit says: May 11, 2014 5:16 PM

Just think of the media firestorm that will happen when the Rams cut their 7th round pick.

Will Obama make the Rams keep him?

Florio is such a d*ck head. I’m still amazed that PFT has been such a success for him. Nobody can kill a horse and continue to beat it like Florio

  16. derekgorgonstar says: May 11, 2014 7:23 PM

I was so glad Sam didn’t go to the redskins so florio would have even more to write about. Site is more about his opinions, (and pulling comments he doesn’t like), than football news anymore….

  17. dbfan4ever says: May 11, 2014 7:51 PM

I think it would be hilarious if some player would put the word out that they had a major announcement and with all the media there look into the camera and say “I have decided that it is about time that I share the news with the world, I cannot deny it anymore so at this time I would like to announce that I am a heterosexual. Although I do not fear the reaction from the locker room I believe I do have reason to fear the reaction from the media in general!

OBAMA!!!! Please worry about things that are important!!!!! Really

  19. dcviking says: May 11, 2014 9:26 PM

I’m not trying sell short what Michael Sam did, but moving forward, the best thing he can be is a good football player — make it about football, and in this case, equality and respect will follow.

  20. southernpatriots says: May 12, 2014 5:22 AM

Obama said he had a pen and a telephone and he is using them.
