Rutgers dismisses QB Philip Nelson after assault charges

Rutgers coach Kyle Flood announced Tuesday quarterback Philip Nelson has been dismissed from the program following an alleged assault that left a man in critical condition over the weekend.

“The Rutgers football family’s thoughts and prayers are with Isaac Kolstad and his family,” coach Kyle Flood said in a statement released Tuesday morning.

Nelson, who transferred from Minnesota to Rutgers and would’ve been eligible for the Scarlet Knights in 2015, was charged with assault after allegedly kicking Isaac Kolstad, a former D-II football player, in the head during an altercation early Sunday morning in Mankato, Minn. According to his family, Kolstad suffered permanent brain damage and is “fighting for his life.”

In two years with Minnesota, the 20-year-old Nelson completed about 50 percent of his passes for 2,179 yards with 17 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

I think it’s only in the movies where prisons have football teams.

I hope the guy he assaulted can make a complete recovery. A brutal and senseless act.

Two lives ruined over what? So senseless, pointless.

And yet, some schools will still offer Nelson a scholarship to play football.

Hey Philip, every coach from the SEC is on hold for you… which call did you want to take first?

I am pretty certain Philip is looking @ serving time along with the other guy that got arrested today. No one should feel sorry for Philip.

Who kicks another human in the head?

That’s the stupidest question of all time, there are plenty of reasons to kick someone in the head. Let someone lay a hand, on a member of my family and see if I wouldn’t kick them in the head if given a chance.

This incident has touched many lives. There is the kid in the hospital who will be severely impacted for the rest of his days by brain damage. Isaac Kolstad had a wife and a child with a second on the way. Then there are the perps who bludgeoned this kid. There will be no more football, no more local fans, and a long stretch of incarceration for them both. This was bad business all the way around brought on by 10 seconds of drunken anger.

Oh, and Phillips got out of town as soon as he made bail. He is hiding back at Rutgers. Keep him, New Jersey.

While we can all agree Nelson screwed up and what he did was wrong, the more details that emerge…like Kolstad punched him in the back first. Anybody here ever been punched in the back? Hard to think straight in 5-10 seconds after.

And if Kolstad doesn’t survive….no, it’s not murder one. It’s manslaughter. Not that it matters.

I had read that Rutgers may suspend/ban Philip Nelson from campus.

Has anyone heard any more about that?

Suspended/banned for violating Rutgers student code.
