Once thought to be a mortal lock to transfer to Texas, it appears Max Wittek, the erstwhile USC quarterback, will be forced to pick another destination.
The Austin American-Statesman, citing a source close to the situation, wrote Wednesday “that the Longhorns are backing away from offering Wittek a scholarship for undisclosed reasons.” The development is more than mildly surprising as Wittek has visited Austin on multiple occasions, including the spring game.
To where Wittek will turn, if the report is accurate, is unclear, although he does have several options.
In addition to Texas, Wittek has visited Hawaii as well. Louisville is also thought to be a potential destination, while Pittsburgh has been part of the discussion too.
As Wittek will graduate this spring, he will be eligible to play immediately at any FBS program and maintain two years of eligibility.
Wittek was a four-star member of the Trojans’ 2011 recruiting class, rated as the No. 3 pro-style quarterback in the country. In late March, Wittek announced he would be transferring from USC in search of a better shot at playing time.
UPDATED 8:44 p.m. ET: Texas cooling on its interest in Wittek apparently comes as a surprise to the player.
