S. Miss reaches into JUCO ranks for new assistant

Just a handful of days after one of his assistants abruptly and unexpectedly resigned, Todd Monken has filled the void in his Southern Miss coaching staff.

According to CoachingSearch.com‘s Pete Roussel, Monken has hired Itawamba Community College’s Jon Williams as an assistant. Williams resigned as the JUCO’s head coach to take the Southern Miss job.

Monken subsequently confirmed the hire to Patrick Magee of the Sun Herald.

Williams will replace Steve Buckley, who left the Golden Eagles late last month for an opportunity in the private sector.

Just what title Williams will hold is unclear as Buckley was simply designated as “assistant head coach” as well as serving as director of player personnel. Monken doesn’t have an outside receivers coach on his staff -- John Wozniak serves as inside receivers coach in addition to his special teams coordinating -- so that could be an option, as could the head coach deciding to shift responsibilities of other assistants.

The job at Southern Miss will serve as Williams’ first stint as a coach at the FBS level.
