Claiborne, Golden arrested on robbery charges prior to A&M dismissal

Charles Ross, Tommy Sanders, Isaiah Golden

And now we know the rest of the story.

Just a short time ago, Texas A&M announced that linebacker Darian Claiborne and defensive lineman Isaiah Golden had been dismissed from the football program.  No specific reason was given, although each had an off-field incident — or two in Claiborne’s case — over the past several months.

As it turns out, those off-field issues stretched late into the month of May as well.

According to Brent Zwerneman of the San Antonio Express-News, both Claiborne and Golden were arrested June 3 and charged with aggravated robbery.  The charges stem from an alleged drug deal gone bad late last month.

From Zwerneman’s Twitter account, which contained a College Station Police Department report on the incident:

“On this date, as part of the ongoing investigation, Detectives with the College Station Police Department were able to obtain arrest warrants for two suspects in this offense. Their investigation into this incident revealed the following information.

“On May 23, 2014 at approximately 2255 hrs, officers with the College Station Police Department were dispatched to the 2000 blk of Holleman Drive W in regards to a report of an aggravated robbery that had just occurred. Upon arrival officers met with two victims, a 20 year old male and a 22 year old male, and learned that the reported robbery had actually occurred a short distance away at their apartment in the 1100 blk of Jones Butler Road. They further stated that a third victim, a 20 year old male, was at that apartment and that he had been struck in the head during the robbery by one of the suspects. Officers responded to the apartment, located the third victim, and found him to have suffered minor injuries as a result of being struck.

“Investigation at the scene found that the three victims had entered into an agreement to purchase a quantity of marijuana from the suspects. When the suspects arrived at the apartment to complete the transaction, one of the suspects produced a handgun, pointed it at one of the victims while the other suspect took the money that was present to purchase the marijuana. While this was occurring, one of the victims stood up from the couch and was struck in the face by the suspect with the handgun. The suspects then fled the area on foot and the victims notified police.

“The investigation into the aggravated robbery continued by the Criminal Investigations Division and the suspects were able to be identified. Through the continued investigation, detectives were able to obtain warrants charging the two suspects for this offense on June 3, 2014.”

In other words, head coach Kevin Sumlin had no choice to part ways with a pair of players who were expected to be starters in 2014.

    Never thought the kids would call the cops on them.

    They had to sell drugs? Doesn’t the $EC and A&M give them enough money?

    Not for nothing but this is getting ridiculous. It’s one thing for public drunkeness or even possession of marijuana. But these days it possession of firearms and aggravated burglary/assault. These are hardened f–king criminals.

    Aggravated assault. In Texas, you serve time for that.

    What a buncha idiots.

    what were these dummy’s trying to do? History shows that only the Hurricanes, of the ’80’s-’90’s, could deal & get away with it.

    Well I wish that Sumlin had done this because it’s what needed to be done and not just because he had no choice.

    Sumlin HAS to get control of this roster. SOOOO many off the field incidents this off season are going to start threatening what he has built in a just a short amount of time.

    Join the SEC and you have to act like them.

    Yeah, A&M was probably as pure as the driven snow back in the Southwest Conference days.

    Or even during their time in the Big 12, for that matter.

    Some of the Aggie coaches have chosen a new hashtag during this recruiting cycle: #WRTS. Presumably it stands for “We run this state.”

    Which is odd, considering A&M’s record against their hated brethren Texas, is in the Longhorn’s favor to the tune of 154-96-5 in 9 major sports. That’s a 61.6-percent winning percentage.

    Hmm. Maybe it stands for “We request time served.”

    That fits better considering all the off-field issues of late. But hey, Coach Cool wins kids over with the DJ at practice and a swag-copter.

    Bad apples in college athletics is a problem across the board, just as it is a problem in every walk of life. This sort of thing could happen at virtually any major program in the country.

    To you fans who are slamming A&M and/or the SEC about this, instead of gleefully rubbing your hands together, should instead by grateful, and saying to yourselves: there but by the grace of God goes my program.

    onlyoneleft (AKA SEC TROLL) says;

    “Join the SEC and you have to act like them”

    ———————————————————-

    You along with others (derekgorgonstar, packerbadger, ohioguy, rabbi187) continue to bark the same BS. Guess you missed a few articles of late such as the case of the Rutgers QB that assaulted another player from a neighboring division 2 school. The victim is still in a coma, part of his brain had to be removed and he’s on life support. Or maybe the recent article about two players from Washington arrested for assault. Or may the OK St. player also arrested for assault.

    The fact that there is repeated evidence that this type of crime is becoming increasingly frequent across college football programs ALL OVER THE COUNTRY proves your bigotry and disdain for the SEC.

    As a country together ALL programs and communities need to deal with this type of behavior and stop pretending it only happens in areas that are not relative to your location… Only two words can describe your kind… BIGOT / IDIOT!

    The NCAA needs to start taking scholarships or fining coaches game checks or this will never stop. Hit the coaches in the pocket and they will. It recruit felons. This isn’t these a$$holes first rodeo with a weapon. I’m sure they have juvenile records as long as there arms to match the tattoos they most likely have

  18. psly2124 says: Jun 4, 2014 4:45 PM

    Dhardy, you are obviously a race baitor. Anyone who uses the word bigot is uneducated and has the iq of the mentally challenged . I’m sick and tired of bigot being thrown around over statements. Shows a lack of intelligence by the accuser.

    plsy2124

    You are obviously an idiot!

    BIGOT: a person who strongly and unfairly dislikes other people, ideas, etc. : a bigoted person; especially : a person who hates or refuses to accept the members of a particular group (such as a racial, ethnical or religious group)

    Now thats the definition of a Bigot and it is right on time with some on here who obsessivley troll any thread about an SEC team or player and since you want to throw out what you’re “sick of” I have a right to voice my discontent as well.

    As far as my intelligence level I’ve had a long successful career in the Medical field, so thank GOD you’re opinion of my level of intelligence is merely that, Your opinion….

  20. psly2124 says: Jun 4, 2014 6:45 PM

    Dhardy: you clean up medical waste. How does that make you intelligent. I know what bigot means and don’t have to look up. I know it’s an overused word that gets thrown around by people with iq’s under 80.

  21. dhardy8207 says: Jun 4, 2014 7:05 PM

    psly2124;

    I stand corrected, by your own statements you’re not just an idiot but a bigot as well. Someone who obviously has a superiority complex that can only be fed by making accusations and assumptions about someone they know nothing about just like your cousin onlyoneleft. Obviously he/she needs to change that screen name because you just proved there are more than one simple minded, bigotted person roaming these threads…

    @deucez2

    I see that overall record thrown around a lot but horns fans that fail to remember that for over half of this rivalry, A&M was an all male military school akin the Citadel.

    You’re literally touting UT’s football dominance over A&M 50+ years ago….

    In my lifetime, A&M is up 17-16 in football.

    As of RIGHT NOW… A&M is the premier program in Texas. And it’s hard to argue otherwise. (Maybe I’ll give Baylor a forum) The Aggies have recently dominated in recruiting, placing players in the NFL, and national prominence. But it’s cyclical. I still think Texas needs to fix the Big 12 or leave to reassert dominance.

    (My argument does take a nasty hit though with UT beating A&M in the NCAA Regionals last week… ughh)
