Alabama sportswriters to honor Jameis Winston

If you thought the award season was over for the 2013 college football season, think again. The accolades continue to roll in for Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston.

The Alabama Sports Writers Association will honor Winston as the 2013 Alabama Amateur Athlete of the Year during a ceremony Sunday evening. Winston will not be attending the awards banquet due to a prior engagement, according to Florida State officials.

“An honor like that coming to Jameis from his home state while he’s off playing in Florida means something to us,” Winston’s father, Antonor Winston said in a story by the Associated Press. “That’s special. Any award from the people of the state of Alabama is special to our family.”

Winston’s trophy shelf is already pretty crowded after his debut season in Tallahassee. Winston won the Heisman Trophy, Walter Camp Award, Davey O’Brien Award and Manning Award. He also received numerous All-American honors, was named AP Player of the Year, the ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year and ACC Player of the Year. Oh, in case you forgot, he also led Florida State to an ACC and a BCS championship with the poise of an upperclassman.

Winston’s baseball achievements help solidify him as one of the top amateur athletes from the state of Alabama of course. Winston pitches and plays outfield for Florida State’s baseball team.

As noted by the Associated Press, Winston joins former Heisman Trophy winners Mark Ingram (Alabama) and Cam Newton (Auburn) in receiving the honor from the ASWA immediately after winning the Heisman Trophy.

“Well guys neither Alabama or Auburn won the championship this year, is there some way we can glom on to FSU’s championship and jump on that bandwagon?”
