Clemson not skimping on coaching staff salaries

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was rewarded with an eight-year contract extension back in January, fresh off a victory over Ohio State in the Orange Bowl. As that extension was announced, so was information about the salary pool for the assistant coaching staff being bumped to $4.9 million, an increase of $700,000 from the previous year. It turns out the assistant coaching staff will still see a bump in the combined pay, but the total amount to be paid to Clemson’s coaching staff will be $4.4 million.

The Associated Press reports Clemson’s coaching contracts for the assistant caching staff in 2014 will total $4.4 million next season, with the staff being locked in for two years. Offensive coordinator Chad Morris will be paid $1.3 million, the most of any assistant coach. Morris was the only assistant not to redo his contract, and he is the highest paid assistant coach in college football.

Brent Venables, Clemson’s defensive coordinator, will be paid $875,000 in 2014, an increase of $75,000 from last season’s salary. Defensive ends coach Marion Hobby will receive $400,000, up from $375,000.

Keeping an entire coaching staff together is critical when it comes to building and growing a program. It comes in handy on the recruiting trails and allows players to grow under a unified leadership. Clemson is showing no signs of skimping on its coaching staff as the program looks to challenge Florida State to get back to the top of the ACC sooner, rather than later.
