Five-star Gator frosh cited for pot possession

A touted member of Florida’s most recent recruiting class has found his name in the headlines for the wrong (for now) reasons.

According to both the Orlando Sentinel and Tampa Bay Times, Jalen Tabor was cited in late May for possession of marijuana. The citation was made public Monday, and Tabor has already received deferred prosecution.

Here are a few details, courtesy of the Sentinel:

Tabor, 18, was in a vehicle stopped at 1:54 a.m. because police smelled marijuana, according to a Gainesville Police Department report. A small bag of marijuana fell from Tabor’s shorts when he exited the vehicle.

It appears that any punishment Tabor may have been facing is already in the past.

“Jalen has faced the consequences for his actions and is very remorseful,” UF head coach Will Muschamp said in a statement. “He is aware that this is not how we represent the University of Florida.”

Tabor was a five-star member of the Gators’ 2014 recruiting class, rated as the No. 3 cornerback in the country and the No. 10 player at any position in the nation. He was an early enrollee who participated in spring practice and is expected to contribute immediately.

Also, as evidenced by the photo, he was the “Kid n’ Play Recruit of the Year,” an honor most recently claimed by Kentucky basketball star Nerlens Noel.
