Report: Academic status of two Alabama signees up in the air

Nick Saban

South Carolina is not the only SEC school waiting to learn if some new signees will even be eligible for the start of the 2014 college football season. There is still some question as to what the status for a pair of Alabama Class of 2014 signees will be at the start of the season.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban said Thursday at SEC Media Days the staff is waiting to see where potential running back Bo Scarbrough and offensive lineman Montel McBride will fall academically at the end of the summer. The two are not currently on campus according to Al.com. Considering most of the Class of 2014 has been on campus since May, that is certainly a cause for some alarm.

“They won’t be completed until the end of summer school,” Saban said. “I can’t really make a prediction on what their status will be until their summer school is over.”

Scarbrough was rated a five-star athlete by Rivals, and was reported to be used as a running back at Alabama. McBride was rated a four-star offensive lineman by Rivals.

Of course, Alabama should have plenty of talent on the roster to overcome any absences by either player if it comes to that.

The University of Alabama is one rung above a community college as far as academics are concerned.

  2. BrownsTown says: Jul 17, 2014 9:12 PM

Do they offer arborist courses at this community college?

  3. burm61 says: Jul 17, 2014 9:27 PM

Exactly how dumb are you to not get into Alabama? Not criticizing their alumni or student body but it’s not hard to get into let alone as a football player!

  4. brianincbus says: Jul 17, 2014 9:28 PM

I’m sure with them signing 35 players every year they’ll be fine.

  5. Deb says: Jul 17, 2014 10:06 PM

So, osage44, Alabama is one rung above a community college and the lunacy one deranged fan posted about the A&M construction site is typical Bama fan behavior.

If Alabama and its fans are so pathetic … why are you desperate to be first in line to comment on Tide threads? Gee, you’d think a rational fan with all your intelligence would have better things to do. Obsessed much?

  6. barkleyblows says: Jul 17, 2014 10:27 PM

I didn’t know they had academic standards in the SECheat.

  7. dcroz says: Jul 17, 2014 11:01 PM

Ah, yes, anything about academics at Alabama and all the knuckle-draggers come out to comment. BrownsTown, barkleyblows, osage44…the veritable “Confederacy of Dunces” conjoined with The Three Stooges.

  8. stoicpaisano says: Jul 17, 2014 11:13 PM

I’m guessing that if anyone else pulls a Drake or Reed before summer camp, they’ll get the boot and Scarbrough or McBride slides in.

Or in other words, they’re assed out if they’re scholarships #86-87, but good to go if they’re #84-85. To be fair, they should’ve taken care of business in high school and not put themselves in this situation.

  9. mauldawg says: Jul 18, 2014 5:47 AM

NS will find away to get their grades up to par if he really needs them. I wouldn’t believe anything NS says or does.

  10. gatiger says: Jul 18, 2014 7:53 AM

And just why do you think EVERY school out there signs 25-30 kids when they only have 18-20 scholarships. Did I mention EVERY school. Look back at how many your school offered. All of them know there will be a few that run into trouble with the law, have grade issues, etc, that will exclude them from getting into your fine academic institution. Bama, Ohio State, USC, you name it…they all do it.

By the way, if your great academic institution goes 4-8, 5-7 for a couple of years….will you be discussing your coaches graduation rate or have him on the firing blocks.

Every school hires a coach to win. Saban does as good a job as the next of playing within the rules given.

I Don’t particularly want Bama to be successful, especially against my Tigers, but I hope these kids make it either there or somewhere else.

  11. 11inthebox says: Jul 18, 2014 8:32 AM

    @GATiger:
Perfectly stated. Only thing that matters is winning. Otherwise people get fired.

Its so funny when posters on THIS site comment on academic achievement.

Some just love posting derogatory comments without facts. According to the US Dept. of Edu, the University of Alabama ranks 86th nationally of all public universities. Here are a few other similar size universities and their rankings.

    Auburn #91
    FSU #93
    Iowa St. #101
    Kansas #101 (tied with FSU)
    Unv. Nebraska #102
Unv. Oklahoma #102 (tied with Nebraska)
    Unv. Oregon #109
    Unv. South Carolina #112
    Unv. Arizona #119
    Texas Tech #161
    WVU #170

Alabama’s graduation rate especially amongst athletes has improved to 80%. Some must be sore because they didn’t graduate from the school of their choice. Just a few facts for ya but don’t let that get in the way of spouting off your disdain and uneducated opinions. Keep staring at that GED certificate on your wall and try not let envy eat you up…

  14. friarjack61 says: Jul 18, 2014 9:21 AM

Can’t get into school, because of the lack of education ‘smarts’, so announce to your gang buddies that you are going Pro !

  15. wareagle1961 says: Jul 18, 2014 9:48 AM

Color me shocked if either isn’t declared eligible

In case anyone is wondering… The University of Alabama ranked first among public universities nationwide in the enrollment of National Merit Scholars for 2012-2013. That also put them fourth among all universities. (only the University of Chicago, Harvard, and the University of Southern California enrolled more National Merit Scholars). UA has maintained its ranking among the top public universities in the nation in U.S. News and World Report’s annual college rankings for more than a decade. Thirty-nine UA students have been named Goldwater Scholars (including two in 2013) and the University of Alabama has produced a total of 15 Rhodes Scholars and 13 Truman Scholars.

I’m not sure about osage44′s community college but academics at The University of Alabama seem to be doing fairly well.

  17. ducksk says: Jul 18, 2014 3:35 PM

And they have AJ’s girlfriend. Oh, no they don’t. Alabammy is always at the bottom of all levels of education no matter what you say. It still has a wheel in the ditch.

  18. irishlad19 says: Jul 18, 2014 4:08 PM

Comparing academic quality/rankings among universities is usually apples to oranges. Unless completely objective standards are used (such as graduation rates) the comparisons are typically subjective.
For instance, saying that Alabama has a high number of Merit Scholars enrolled says nothing about the enrollment standards, or lack thereof, for scholarship football players.

It’s generally acknowledged that with a few exceptions the power teams don’t expect much of their football and BB players academically, providing courses and tutors to keep them eligible. ‘Bama is no worse than many others.

  19. shaunodame says: Jul 18, 2014 4:33 PM

If these young men couldn’t pass their High School classes how do they ever expect to cut it at Alabama?! All that bull about Bama being easy is a load of crap. At the gene of the day it’s still a College Institution and it is NOT going to be easy, ESPECIALLY while also being a Division I athlete.

  20. bamadruid says: Jul 18, 2014 7:03 PM

@irishlad19 – The number of scholars was not offered as a statement of admission standards but a fact-based position on University of Alabama academic achievement for those who are interested.

And there we go. No matter the how reputable the source it doesn’t coincide with your mud slinging so can’t be true. Do you have a brother that post on CFT under the username “packerbadger” because you two sure have similar methods to show your bigotry. For a gentleman that claims to be so well educated and has a wealth of experience in management and corporate environments you have no problem looking low on “us little people”. Despite such a self claimed resume as you have posted on other threads you continue to stoop low enough with the name calling, stereotypes and such that shows your lack of intelligence. People from “Alabammy” must really stick in your crawl, I mean you’re working overtime here to make accusations and dispell any source that stands to debunk all those bigotted remarks you’re making.

Seriously, seek help for that obsession you got there with us rednecks down here. If you despise our kind so intently feel free to skip on past the threads that contain such content that brings out the absolute worse in a man with your level of knowledge….

UA graduates 67% in 6 years. Pathetic. Go do some homework hillbilly. Better yet, volunteer at a school if your so smart. Alabammy is is the bottom 5 in this country in education. Believe it or not. Students, parents, teachers, counselors, principals, professors, ad’s, coaches and am instructors need to own it. I’m about improving citizens in this country. I really could care less if your color, sex, gender or anything else about you. If you have a good education, you are way ahead.

And why do you think that is? Maybe because there really aren’t any academics at Alabumpkin’ and the rest of the country knows this? But thank you Alabumpkin’ for PROVING our impressions correct! Alabumpkin’ has about half the comment threads here on CFT….and none of them are good! Lol!

Wisconsin is ranked #11. I’m guessing all Big 10 Universities are ranked higher than Alabumpkin’….much, much higher. Btw, Nebraska isn’t part of the original Big 10 and is essentially still a Big 12 school.

Well if you are so knowledgeable of the situation here and at UA then you need to be working for the Department of Education who totally disagrees with your bigotted statistics there…

Keep proving my point by calling me “hillbilly” and other such names. You and your brother “packerbadger” must have decided to tag team this thread because you alone got overwhelmed. Your not about improving anything but your own smug “I’m holier than thou opinion of yourself. That too is evident by every post you make is self gradifying in some way. People who are about “everyone” as in “every citizen” and equality don’t take every opportunity to degrade or demean folks from a certain region of the country.

While you’re spouting off statistics, Alabama has a high rate of youngsters that enroll in military services because they can’t afford to further their education without it. They enlist not thinking they are just going to protect the lowly citizens of this state but smug ass, bigotted jerks such as yourself. Keep on with the hating though, it obviously serves some critical need you have to feel better about yourself and current state in life…

    @packerbadger,

Well, there packerbooger is again. You’ve been AWAL lately. They must be letting you out of that padded room again and you’re taking every opportunity of that priviledge of the internet. All kinds of threads have been posted that concern the troubles of schools in every conference, but your usual facination with the SEC and particularly UA is rearing its ugly head again.

Docs should really tweek your meds if they expect any real progress of bringing you current with the times…

  28. packerbadger says: Jul 23, 2014 2:00 PM

WORST fans in any/all sports are Alabumpkin’ fans. State/school are krapholes. Oh, do you yell “Roll Tide” before or after you nail your sister?

Btw you ret@rd… its AWOL……but you were edjamacated at Alabumpkin’…..

Awww packerbooger still throwing that same tripe you use on EVERY SINGLE POST YOU MAKE…

LOL…you got a lot of room insulting someone else’s level of intelligence when you post things such as “krapholes” which there is no such word. Did you mean “crap” holes.

LOLOLOLOL…. try to give that goat of yours a break and see if your sister will stand in for that poor creature for a change…
