Ohio State fires band director and will investigate sexual culture

Ohio State Marching Band

This one strays a bit away from the football side of our usual conversation, but few would argue the marching band is as much a part of the college football experience as anything else. Ohio State’s marching band is one of the best in the country, earning the nickname The Best Damn Band in the Land for a good reason, but it is currently in an unfortunate position. Ohio State has fired band director Jon Waters and continues to investigate what is being referred to as a sexualized culture within the organization.

Ohio State has been investigating the marching band for the last two months, according to The Columbus Dispatch, following a complaint registered by a parent of a member of the band. The investigation turned up evidence of students routinely harassing or hazing each other, usually new students. Further complicating things is information suggesting the director of bands was aware of such activity and did nothing to prevent it from continuing. One of the specific complaints claimed students in the band went on parade in their underwear in the middle of the night. This was allegedly done under the supervision of Waters and other staff members. This obviously goes against the university’s sexual harassment policy, which prompted the investigation, which gathered testimony from nine witnesses as well as Waters, other staff members and the concerned parent and child.

You can read the full 23-page report, which includes some vulgar and not-safe-for-work descriptions.

Some may to write off some of the information in the report as “college kids doing college things,” but even if that is the case there still is a line that needs to be drawn, especially from the leaders of the organization. Knowing the student policies, if Waters did indeed allow some of these thing to continue then the university was absolutely in the right to take swift action.

My daughter was in band in HS and all kinds of things were happening like rapes, hazing, physical abuse of girls. The band and guard directors knew all about it and did everything possible to keep it “in house”.

Fire the entire band staff, those people knew and never stepped up. Kids will get hurt, get STDs that they will never recover from, forced to do things that are against their morals or religious beliefs ….just to be “part of the band”.

Assume that all the staff knew, not just the head of the snake, and fire them all. THAT will get the attention of band staff around the country.

After years of observation, and having seen my Alma Mater, SIU’s Marching Concert Band perform years ago, I have always concluded the band members are the craziest, happily wild students on campus….and that includes the Pep Bands…..high school Peps, included.

They have appeared to, always have fun, providing entertainment for all in attendance. This story, does state the crazy times that are had within the band culture; but, unfortunately uncovered, too much, unmonitored disrespect.

Bands are loaded with fun people, who enjoy entertaining not only us, but themselves with every move, of every song. I am sure all schools will view this, and begin to, positively monitor activities of the members.

What? I thought Wisconsin had all the deviant bandies. Way to make the BIG10 look bad OSU. SEC fans, have at it.

Sounds like a culture problem with some severely sexually inappropriate traditions. I’d recommend a two year bowl ban, reductions in scholarships for the football team, and a $30 million dollar fine.

Meanwhile in news that actually influenced a football team, UNC still hasn’t been punished for giving their team fake classes for fake A’s to keep them all academically eligible.

I was a drummer in my HS band, but I was also a football and basketball player. The band was more fun than both sports combined because of how promiscuous the girls were. Not only band girls but the dance team and color guard too. Lots of long bus rides for competitions and weekend trips. If there was no sex in band, there wouldnt be bands, just solo artists! Special thanks to the woodwind girls…you know who you are. I didnt see much in the way of hazing going on at my school like you hear about in Ohio and the deep south though.

Shut down the university NOW! Take away all wins from 1990 until now! Get Louie Freesch do a half ass report! ESPN get T.J.Quinn to stand in front of Urban house hurling inaccurate statement now! SHUT DOWN THE SCHOOL!

Stop calling them kids. They are 18 or older. They are adults and make their own choices. They could be in the military right now, and nobody calls an 18 year old private “a kid”.

  18. dmarado says: Jul 24, 2014 4:48 PM

How are they shocked that Jon Waters ran the band with little regard for dignity? Haven’t they seen his films?

  19. historyofmatt says: Jul 24, 2014 4:49 PM

Like the constantly overrated Suckeyes football team, this band is also extremely overrated.

A relic of a time when the sports media was comprised mostly of people who all seemed to graduate from Northwestern or Michigan, and thus dominated the sport with their Northern & Midwestern biases.

If you turn on the TV, you can watch Clemson score again on that overrated crap team from a crap conference.

lol, tradition/old school felonious games. My pee wee football coach used to call us little maggots or would be f..gots. we were told we had the choice. when a lineman made a mistake he’d grab us by the face mask and stick our heads into another players butt cheeks making jokes about our penises or sexual preferences. We were told if we went his ten year old daughters vagina he’d kill us. great memories from the early eighties. and my coach is now school board administrator and politician using his high Christian morals as the spring board for his political success. all I remember was a drunk a..hole who liked to abuse kids. oh well he didn’t rape any of us, that was the jr. high football coaches job.

I’m a former marching band director, band member, and drum corps member. After reading the report, it seems to me the director is getting railroaded. It seems he tried to change some things that had been going on for a very long time. Also, none of what was described is unusual for large band programs and drum & bugle corps. None of it. I’m not saying it is appropriate, but firing the director and having outside entities investigate and claiming there are Title IX violations? Ridiculous. These are nearly all adults, not children. College itself is a sexualized environment. If the administration was that concerned, it should have directs the band leadership to change things more swiftly.

And why is this on a football site?? I’m confused. Was this guy part of the football team? I didn’t see that anywhere. ??

  24. dmvtransplant says: Jul 24, 2014 5:43 PM

If it happened at a Black School the director would probably get a raise.

  25. irishlad19 says: Jul 24, 2014 6:02 PM

After the band member death at Florida A&M due to harassment you’d think Band Directors would be cautious.
This guy must have been stupid.

  26. irishlad19 says: Jul 24, 2014 6:05 PM

DMV, a truly undisguised racial comment. Don’t too many such ignorant comments publicly these days.

  27. dmvtransplant says: Jul 24, 2014 6:10 PM

    @ irishlad19

I’m black and my cousin ended up in the hospital for 2 days, because of band hazing at an all black college and no charges were ever filed against the band members involved.

Next time you might want to ask the race of the person you’re trying to insult. So please save your White Guilty for someone it applies too. MY NINJA!!

Come on NCAA penalize the Football Team. Some of these kids are minors so burn OSU TO THE GROUND. After all Barkley Blows big time

  31. Deb says: Jul 24, 2014 8:43 PM

Grow up, sortssux. This isn’t about women in sports destroying tradition. If you lived in Florida, you would have gotten to watch all the sad, sickening news reports about the male band members at FAMU who murdered their male drum major in a hazing incident.

College hazing rituals are idiotic, dangerous–and not gender specific. I loved watching the Ohio State band’s performances online last season. FAMU’s band seemed to be a happy bunch, too–until someone died. Universities can’t afford to take chances with this kind of stuff. And the staff is paid to know better.

  32. mtheparrothead says: Jul 24, 2014 8:44 PM

We have to assume it involved homosexual relations cuz no man would touch those burly Ohio dimes. Buckeyes and brownies. No wonder Ohio lasses are fat.

  33. derekgorgonstar says: Jul 24, 2014 9:24 PM

Is Urban Meyer directing the band, too?

  34. tendigitpoet says: Jul 24, 2014 9:48 PM

I just read the report. I need to shower all over again. No matter how gifted Waters was, this is flat disgusting and has no place anywhere. As an alumnus himself, Waters should have known better. The whole lot of ‘em (band staff) should know better. I say cut the lot of them loose and take a one-year hiatus to regroup.

  35. stoicpaisano says: Jul 24, 2014 9:50 PM

This is ridiculous, some virgin can’t get any pussy and Waters gets the same punishment as the FAMU director who saw a homicide under his watch? A student so cowardly that they had a parent file a complaint?

What are the graduation and arrest rates for TBDBITL members? Why do we care about the internal, informal, student-run practices that break no laws?

  36. tackandcover says: Jul 24, 2014 10:02 PM

“The Best Band in the Land”? Despite the atrocities at FAMU, I’ll put any of the HBC* bands up against any band anywhere.

*for the underinformed, HBC means historically black college.

  37. 35longmiles says: Jul 25, 2014 6:41 AM

Socially awkward fat guys banging socially awkward fat chicks.

  38. kastout11 says: Jul 25, 2014 9:24 AM

Really. This is college. I would guess that behavior like this occurs within every univeristy band in the country, not just OSU.

You must have skipped over the parts where Waters told the investigators one thing. But it was then told by several different witnesses that Waters was not exactly truthful. I don’t care where you work; lying to your bosses will get you canned.

Another reason I think he was let go. He was an alumnae of the program. He participated in these traditions. His best friends participated in these traditions. Who was going to listen to him to affect any change when he himself had been participating in them?

The entire report read like Waters was doing “just enough” “change” to say he was doing something but wasn’t really trying.
