Report: Penn State tabs Sandy Barbour as new AD

After two and half years of turmoil in the school’s leadership, Penn State University has finally found the person it wants to lead its athletic programs.

Sandy Barbour, who previously served as Cal’s athletic director, will take over the same role at Penn State, according to’s Brett McMurphy. Barbour fills the role vacated by soon-to-be-retired Penn State AD Dave Joyner, who took over the position after the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

Barbour, 54, was Cal’s athletic director from 2004 until she resigned from the position on June 27. Prior to Cal, Barbour served as Notre Dame’s deputy director of athletics from 2002 to ’04.

During her time with the Golden Bears, the university’s football team was 68-57.  However, the program has been on a steady decline over the past four years. Part of the reason Barbour was eventually forced out at Cal was based on the football program’s 1-11  record last season and it finished dead last in the Pac-12 among graduation rates.

Barbour was able to get a new stadium built for the football program, but she left Cal with $445 million in debt due to athletic renovations, according to the San Francisco Gate.

There will also be a question of how Barbour will mesh with the coaching staffs already in place.

Penn State’s football program was kept afloat by former head coach Bill O’Brien. Once O’Brien left for the NFL, Penn State made a major hire by luring James Franklin away from Vanderbilt. However, there are always concerns over how attached a new athletic director is with a head coach they didn’t hire.

Barbour will provide Penn State with something the university has lacked in recent years…stability. But her recent track record makes this a questionable hire.

She was fired from Tulane because of incompetence.

How does she keep failing upwards??? Tulane to Cal to Penn State. This kind of seems like Penn State saying ‘Hey we aren’t the good ol boys anymore. Look our AD is a woman!’

Based on Barbour’s resume’ this hire makes about as much sense as having Condoleezza Rice as part of the playoff selection committee.

    Good luck with that

a new face for hate. how did she back into it. the twelve hundred applicants before her said NO.

musketmaniac, a new face for hate? What are you even talking about?

    @ bigdinla

Actually I fail to see how a person who has never played or coached football at any level is more qualified than multiple current AD’s and a hall of fame coach. Outside of being bad at every government job she’s ever had I fail to see what else she is good at?

the simple fact that there are a ton of people that hate Penn state football. and although she has absolutely nothing to do with any of the scandal. That hasn’t help Franklin out. who gets a lot of comments relating to the scandal. does that explain it to you, or should I Type slower.

She fits right in at Ped State!!

  12. jec332 says: Jul 26, 2014 11:11 PM

There have always been a ton of people that hated Penn State football. That’s true of any major program. “No, jec332. People REALLY hate PSU.” Yes, a hate level is definitely relevant when watching on tv. A usual hate is fine, but a person REALLY hating a team has been known to alter the course of games.

Franklin currently has a recruiting class that’s ranked in the top 5 in the country, so it doesn’t seem like there are too many comments. I doubt recruits go to the comment sections thinking, “Hm, what is musketmaniac’s view on that program?”

You’re right. She doesn’t have anything to do with the scandal, nor does anyone left.

Ha, you did explain yourself, so thank you. I just wanted to see the flawed logic of your comment and you didn’t disappoint.

Ha, yes, please type slower. That will make a big difference. It might pull your points together into a coherent thought next time.

    Thanks for the laugh!

She has a long history of financial scandals, low graduation rates, and incompetence, then fires the winningest football coach in Cal football history (Jeff Tedford, now OC with the Tampa Bay Bucs), killed the Cal baseball program(no more Cal baseball ever?!), an OUTSPOKEN lesbian who spent her time championing gay rights instead of Cal’s sports program, gets fired for poor performance at Cal, then gets the PSU job?

Maybe she and Ray Rice share the same agent.

Perhaps she is the only one that agreed to shut her yapper and let the football program do as they please!
