Ohio State AD: B1G expansion ‘is about money’

Gene Smith

Ohio State AD Gene Smith knows how to pander to his audience. Within the course of two days, Smith gave two different spins on the addition of Rutgers (and Maryland) to the Big Ten Conference.

Smith defended the league’s addition of Rutgers Saturday in an interview with’s Dan Duggan.

Smith stated Rutgers “will bring a lot to the table.” The Buckeyes’ athletic director complimented Rutgers’ prestigious academic programs. He also mentioned the football team’s success under former head coach Greg Schiano and the money the school put into the program during that period.

The idea Rutgers was chosen to become a member of the Big Ten Conference due to a business decision was merely an after thought.

Smith was far more candid Sunday during an interview with The Columbus Dispatch’s Todd Jones. When Smith was asked directly about the Big Ten’s additions of Rutgers and Maryland, Smith stated the obvious.

“From a business point of view, it makes huge sense,” Smith told Jones. “This is a business deal. This is about money. Everybody wants to dodge that; I don’t. It’s about the stability of our conference for the long term.”

Smith looks at these moves as a way to adjust to the changing landscape of college football and the United States’ shifting population.

“It provides a new geography for us to have a presence in, for a number of reasons: television, recruiting, (and) providing Penn State with some geographical partners,” Smith stated. “The reality is, growth was inevitable for intercollegiate athletic conferences. We needed to be part of that.

“As far as the shifting population, that is reason enough by itself to look at the concept of expansion.”

With the Big Ten’s media days set to commence Monday and Tuesday, a big spectacle will be made of the additions of Rutgers and Maryland. The two programs will be accepted as equals among the likes of Ohio State, Michigan, etc. The reality is these program were merely business acquisitions which proved to be a means to an end for the Big Ten Conference.

Agreed; someone finally called it out

This AD is just 1 of many self serving, overpaid administrators, believe it, he could care less about his student athletes. It’s about the $ and the power, he is not alone in those ranks. Sad.

Funny he didn’t mention $ the other day. Rutgers and Maryland will be like NW, a door mat.

    Go Buckeyes!!!

Translation: Nebraska requires rivals. Hello Kansas & Oklahoma ( old big 8 rivals). Texas goes Indy like ND.

West Virginia and Pitt are better geographical rivals for Penn State and better football schools (and former rivals anyway). It was always about getting the New York City and Washington, D.C. metro areas.

2 easy wins every year for the Suckeyes. Gee it’s funny how both of them appeared on Ohio States
Schedule. Add to the other 10 horrible teams they play

  13. brownsmakemecrazy says: Jul 27, 2014 9:50 PM

Then we will have to hear how because they are 13-0 how they deserve to be in the playoffs when they beat 13 crappy teams. Then if they cry and moan enough and get into the playoffs, they will get blown out by a far superior SEC team. Same old story for the Suckeyes

It’s funny that your name is Browns. If you’re a Browns fan I’m pretty sure several college teams can beat your nfl team lol. Now that’s crazy!

“Population shift”? From the midwest to the northeast? If you were tacking population shifts, they’d have added UTSA, UCF, and GSU.

  16. brownsmakemecrazy says: Jul 28, 2014 3:58 AM

Yeah the Browns blow, but i know the Browns would blow out every team in the Little 14. You scrubs lose to Mac teams.

  17. dmarado says: Jul 28, 2014 5:56 AM

SEC teams lose to FCS so there’s that.

Whats new, some idiot for lower education from Ohio St opened there mouth and as usual, spurted out insults.
Ohio St will not go undefeated this year, but there lengends in their own minds and should have twenty national championships by now. The only problem is they choke in the big games then blame it on something else,it couldn’t be because they suck and outside of the BIG, don’t get the refs to help them win. Someone did get the sec non conference games right, they play fcs schools and the bottom tier at that.
So they can run up the scores on basically a high school teamso they can move up in the top 25.
Urban has already had a lot of player problems and par for the course they remain on the football team just like at Florida, its only going to get worse and then he will up and leave due to health problems, next stop the package 12.

it seems to me that by keep repeating the secondary goal of providing Penn State with geographical rivals shows how much the BiG was worried about the ACC asking PSU to join

” This about money”—Duh, ya think?

  21. barkleyblows says: Jul 28, 2014 9:28 PM

Tobeexact can you try retyping that please?

I would hate to talk to you in person. I’m guessing you have really bad mush mouth or just mentally challenged.

  22. tobeexact says: Jul 29, 2014 9:12 AM

Barkleyblows, yes I could retype, but even with proper spelling and spacing and without the typo’s it would still be over your head. Its very easy to comment on typo errors and proper grammer throughout the comments left on sites.
I just happen to be two weeks post shoulder reconstruction and not very good at typing with one hand, and the wrong one at that.
Your screen name would suggest that your the one with mush mouth or a mouth that’s full.
Your probably some twerp sitting at his computer trolling all day looking for typo’s due to the lack of a real life and or friends.
You couldn’t handle meeting anyone out side of your little world called a computer screen, but I’m the one who is mentally disturbed.
