Bob Stoops says Kevin Sumlin has not called him yet

Kevin Sumlin, Bob Stoops

After the two head coaches of Oklahoma and Texas A&M exchanged some slightly light-hearted jabs, Sooners head coach Bob Stoops says he has not heard from his Aggies counterpart, Kevin Sumlin.

It all started when Stoops was asked about non-conference scheduling during one of many interviews on the ESPN car wash line-up recently. During his response at one point, Stoops used Texas A&M’s non-conference strength of schedule to drive home his point about overall strength of schedule.

Boy, that’s a bunch of toughies,” Stoops said after looking at Texas A&M’s non-conference portion of the 204 schedule. Sumlin took some issue with the comments from the Oklahoma coach and offered a challenge.

“Coach Stoops has the right to say whatever he wants, but if he wants to play us again we’ll take him up on that,” Sumlin told Oklahoma and Texas A&M were conference rivals not so long ago, and they faced off in the Cotton Bowl at the end of the 2012 season. and it seems as though the Aggies won the fertile recruiting grounds in Texas in its divorce from the Big 12 two years ago.

This sounds as though the ball would be in Oklahoma’s court now to make the next move, but that has not happened. As the Sooners opened up fall camp on Friday, Stoops was once again asked about Sumlin and whether or not the two coaches have touched base since the latest comments.

“No, I haven’t,” Stoops said, according to The Oklahoman. Stoops went on to defend his comments and suggest it was not about taking a shot at Texas A&M, but commenting more on the scheduling differences between the Big 12 and SEC.

“I was asked too many times about the fact that we don’t have a Big 12 championship game, does that matter in the equation when other conferences do? And I pointed out the fact that we do play nine conference games,” Stoops explained. “The SEC at that point is only playing eight.”

True, but the eight games played by SEC teams in conference play is generally accepted to be more challenging than the nine games Oklahoma will play in Big 12 play. Hey, if Texas A&M and Texas are not going to get together on an annual basis, perhaps the two rivals of the Longhorns could get together and set-up an annual match-up.

That would be fun, no?

Ok you play a conference championship game. Great. I agree with Stoops on this one, it shouldn’t overshadow the fact that these noncon schedules are loaded with teams boasting jr high talent. Stoops has the right to run his mouth on this one he did beat Bama.

I don’t have a dog in this race, but looking at the preseason top 25, A&M plays 5 top 25 teams and Oklahoma play 2. So even with it’s non-conference games, A&M appears to play the tougher schedule.

lol Stoops. uh he issued u the challenge to pick up the phone and call him and you have not.

look at your conference schedule punk. La Tech, Tulsa and one of the worst teams in the SEC Tennesee. Talk about a bunch of Toughies as you call it. lmao. you cant even talk about your conference schedule. big deal u play 9 conference games vs the SECs 8. look at your conference scrubs vs 7 great teams in the SEC.

Unlikely A&M will play OU or UTx in regular season. He likes the current recruitment dynamic. Not just that, but being assigned the Cocks as a permanent cross division rival makes it doubly tough scheduling talented OOC competition. While its true that iron sharpens iron, its also true that too much competition can backfire. That is especially true when other good teams vying for the national championship are from weaker conferences, so that many of their in-conference games are against virtual cupcakes. Look at it this way: even Pete Carroll would not be too thrilled about having to play the Broncos, the Panthers, the Packers and the Patriots on top of his NFC West foes. No, he would prefer to play teams like the Texans and so he can give his team a breather between times when he is playing the tippy top of competition. A team has to pace itself over the course of the season and its not a good idea to be facing the top dogs every single Saturday.

Stoops has just gotten a little more cocky since his team won the Sugar Bowl over an Alabama team that really didn’t want to be there.

    OU 13, Texas A&M 41.

    That’s what this is about.

Stoops is 11-3 vs tex a&m. It’s not usually a close contest. OU wins by 3 touchdowns on average.

The sec of course are goin to have more teams in the top 25 so what. All of the press favors the sec. Tell me who are the best teams in the sec? Bama, Florida, Auburn? They are the teams in the sec who have been winning national championships. A & M they couldn’t even win a big 12 championship. I mean if you guys want to reflect on the past. All of the bottom dogs in the sec just waive the so were in the sec. Well congrats keep rooting for 3 teams to win it all and gwt most of your recruits.

OU was not exactly a “toughie” in the bowl game after the 2012 season when TAM hammered the Sooners by a margin of 28 points. OU would have a difficult time beating ‘Bama, FSU, or Auburn this coming season. Speaking of the SEC Saban has 3 NC’s over the past 6 years while Stoops, who is a very good coach, has a single NC in the past 15 years.

Let’s wait another 10 years. I suspect. OU will still be relavent and we will be complaining about a team like Florida St scheduling a patsy like A&M.

The SEC championship is the 9th conference game for the two teams that would most likely have a shot at making the playoff…I love how all the big12 coaches have overlooked that in their talking points.

old bobby, sure is trashin it up. hey bob, can you read. get over yourself, yes beating Bama was a feather in your cap. we understand you don’t comprehend the concept of a team that has only one goal each and every season, a national championship. maybe in the next year or two you can fix your problem with that team from Texas and then in another five years get your boys to the big four on a semi-annual basis. then and only then will true football fan listen when you run your mouth.

I love how everybody says that Alabama didnt want to be in the sugar bowl and weren’t motivated. To me that sounds like a bunch of spoiled babies that throw a fit when they don’t get their way. I respect Saban as a coach, but if his team “wasn’t motivated” thats a failure on his part and its pretty pathetic for his players. Great teams bring their A game every game and don’t have “built in excuses” every time they aren’t playing for a NC. They got out coached and out played. They have a great team returning so hopefully they get “motivated” enough to make the playoffs so OU can smash em again and silence the critics for good.

    stoops is all mouth…..

don’t expect him to take up sumlin’s challenge right away….his butt is still sore from the reaming the aggies gave it the last time they played…..

Good gosh, Stoops, what are you doing? What an idiot. The guy wins one game off of a emotionally devastated Alabama team. Had he been smoked in yet another bowl game he would have been run out of Norman. That guy needs to listen closely, because when University of Texas says jump, OU better respond, because that’s the nature of their conference. Mind your own business, ding dong.
