You’re recused: Tom Osborne won’t be part of ‘Husker CFP talk

Not so unexpectedly, a Nebraska legend won’t be involved in any discussion involving his former football team when or if it comes up in the playoff mix.

Citing unnamed sources, is reporting that Tom Osborne will be recused from voting for the Cornhuskers when it comes to the new College Football Playoff. Osborne is one of the 13 voters who makes up the committee that will select the four teams that will take part in the inaugural postseason tournament.

The fact that Osborne has been recused from all things ‘Husker is far from a surprise; after retiring as a long-time NU head coach and athletic director, Osborne still receives a salary from the university, a fact that triggered his recusal.

The fact that it’s a no-brainer comes from the CFP’s own rules:

If a committee member or an immediate family member, e.g., spouse, sibling or child, (a) is compensated by a school, (b) provides professional services for a school, or (c) is on the coaching staff or administrative staff at a school or is a football student-athlete at a school, that member will be recused. Such compensation shall include not only direct employment, but also current paid consulting arrangements, deferred compensation (e.g., contract payments continuing after employment has ended) or other benefits.

Also on the committee are five athletic directors from Power Five conference schools — Arkansas’ Jeff Long (also chairperson), Clemson’s Dan Radakovich, USC’s Pat Haden, West Virginia’s Oliver Luck and Wisconsin’s Barry Alvarez. All five of those will be recused when it comes to voting for their respective schools.

ESPN also writes that “the full recusal policy [will be] released next week.”

I don’t think he has to worry this year….

Pelini seemed to inherited Earle Bruce’s 9-3 syndrome when he recruited him to Ohio State. 9-3 is not playoff material.

So I assume Condoleezza Rice will be recused from voting for Stanford since she’s a member of the school’s faculty.
