Gophers seek to ban ‘Redskins’ name at TCF Stadium

TCF Bank Stadium

The fight over the racial slur that is the nickname of a professional football team has made its way to college football.

In November of this year, the Minnesota Vikings play host to the Washington Redskins at TCF Bank Stadium as the NFL club awaits completion of the construction of its own stadium.  TCF, of course, is the home of the University of Minnesota.

Prompted in part by a letter from a U.S. representative, the school is looking to distance itself from what a growing number are deeming an offensive nickname.  From the Minneapolis Star-Tribune:

The University of Minnesota is working with the Minnesota Vikings in an effort to keep the Washington Redskins’ name from being used in “promotional and game date materials” during the NFL teams’ Nov. 2 game at the school’s stadium in Minneapolis, according to an Aug. 1 letter from university President Eric Kaler to U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum, D-Minn.

In a separate letter to Vikings owner Zygi Wilf, McCollum wrote that “[t]he time for debate has ended — the name of the Washington franchise is clearly an offensive racial slur,” adding. “I urge you, as an NFL team owner, to not remain silent on this matter any longer.”

The Redskins, who have been in full-blown spin mode over the nickname for months, said in response to the push from the lawmaker and the university that the NFL club has “met many Native Americans from Minnesota who agree with our position and feel we are using the term correctly and honorably.”

Kaler, however, wrote that his university has been “working with the Vikings to make every effort to eliminate the use of Washington’s team name” both on game day in promotions leading up to the NFL game.

good for them—won’t work. But good for them.

Cue the “this is tradition,” “I have a lot of friends who are indians and they’re not offended,” comments–even though 82% of recently polled tribal members have said that Redskins is a derogatory term.

Guess what–it is racist to use racist nomenclature–this is not a hard concept to understand.

These pillow-biter liberals are so mad because no cares about this issue. Thank you for being offended for all of us unwashed masses who have better things to do.

Can we please stop asking people if they are white or black on job applications and use the proper “African American” and Caucasian then? Let’s also make sure every rap song removes the “N’ word because of it’s past.

PC is a terrible thing. What a waste of print. It wont be long before the words “cracker” “honkey”
and “white boy” become racist names. People need to grow up. If you are offended by words you are a week person.

    Ridiculous.

Where is that 82% poll? That’s bull. And why do some Native American high schools use Redskins as their name? Enough with this.

The nickname is a horrible representation of American Indians. They are more of a burnt sienna then red.

The name change is inevitable, the longer Dan Snyder procrastinates the worse he looks. It should have been changed a long time ago, ang good for The University of Minnesota for doing this

As dumb as it is, Minnesota actually got themselves in the news. When is the last time that happened?

Meanwhile, Israel & Hamas are at war; a US General was murdered in Afghanistan; our southern border is a sieve; the national debt will bankrupt our children; the VA can’t provide the proper healthcare for our real heroes & the list goes on. But by all means, let’s make a PC issue like a nickname the pressing issue of the day. I’m sure Nero is tuning his fiddle.

  15. thraiderskin says: Aug 7, 2014 11:25 AM

Oh Minnesota… stop acting like u have standards! Jessie Ventura and Al Franken… do I need to continue? Redskins is a professional football team, if TCF doesn’t like it, then don’t except the pro ball money.

  16. raiderufan says: Aug 7, 2014 11:33 AM

Don’t they invite the Fighting Illini in for games?

I’ve heard the term Fighting Illini used to defame Native Americans about as much as I’ve heard Redskin….exactly zero times.

Both sides of this story need to be heard from Native Americans and until it is this should be treated exactly as it is. Nonsense.

One school that still uses the nickname is Red Mesa High in Arizona, located on a Navajo reservation, and where 99.3 percent of its students are Native American. Tommie Yazzie, superintendent of the school district that oversees Red Mesa High School and a full-blooded Navajo, said he is more concerned with the use of Native American war chants and gestures during sporting events. Do we have your attention, Atlanta Braves and KC Chiefs?

The logo and name “Redskins” is about as racist as Notre Dame’s use of a Leprechaun and “Fighting Irish.” I’m an Irish Catholic and it sure doesn’t bother me. I guess the University officials should call in a Paddy Wagon and haul away anybody wearing a Redskins T-Shirt. Odd that it is OK to say “Paddy,” which is a derogatory term for Irish, but not “Redskins.”

  21. tngilmer says: Aug 7, 2014 12:27 PM

I am part native-American. I have spoken with my full blooded NaAm relatives and none of them are offended by the term Redskins. Want to know what offends them? The term Indian. They repeatedly tell me that they did not come here from India. Want to change a team name? How about the Cleveland Indians?

  22. benzo22788 says: Aug 7, 2014 12:52 PM

Why is it that “elitist white liberals” think they need to fix minority problems. If the Native American community is upset, let them express how and why it offends them. From most groups they are proud to be recognized as team names!

  25. mogogo1 says: Aug 7, 2014 1:03 PM

And regardless where you stand on the name, isn’t it getting a bit sanctimonious as writers who used the name without complaint for YEARS up until just very recently now preach to everybody as if they’d always hated the name?

  26. musketmaniac says: Aug 7, 2014 1:24 PM

I Have a dress policy amongst my employees. No rude/racist or drug paraphernalia T-shirts or hats. It’s time to ban the redskins jersey. With the universities fall classes starting this week. I think its time to ban those ugly red shirts and hats.

@benzo22788 This protest was started by the National Congress of American Indians in 1988 when Washington went to the SB. 23 Native American nations and 50 Native American organizations have come out against the name.

@tngilmer Washington receives more scrutiny because it is our nation’s capital, and many don’t want our nation’s capital to be associated with a term that is considered racist. I agree with you though….

I think a decent solution is change the name back to the franchises original name. Before they moved to DC they were the Boston Braves. Keep the colors, keep the logo, and call it a throwback.

  29. fmlizard says: Aug 7, 2014 2:42 PM

They need to scrub out the Maroon and Gold too or it will look like a R-skins home game.

…Except people are demanding the Atlanta Braves change their name too. It’s like the columnist who pretended to be upset the army names helicopters after Indian tribes. I can’t claim there’s nothing at all amiss with a team named “Redskins” in 2014, but this is really just blood in the water.

I am sooooo (phoney) outraged when someone doesn’t call me a European American. Esp when someone doesn’t call me a English-Irish-German-Dutch American. I’m freaking WHITE! Some people are Black. Its for descriptive purposes! If someone is actually outraged because someone calls a team Redskins it either phoney or someone needs therapy because someone got their feelings hurt. This country needs to go back to hurting peoples feelings and toughen it back up again! Oh, I’m soooo outraged because Notre Dame is the Fighting Irish! They need to change their name for me so I can feel better….

one thing we should know about the `pc`. Once the ball starts rolling it doesn’t stop. Washington fans should stock up on their gear. It’s about to be sports memorabilia.

Having said that, where was that holier-than-thou crap 10 years ago? It was a non-issue as it should be today. You’re telling me that with all the problems the country has, the most pressing issue is the name of a football team? I mean, geez, everyone is treating the Redskins as if it were Lord Voldemort or Beetlejuice… he whose name cannot be spoken.

    C’mon man!

Aztecs, Illini, and Seminoles are names of tribes… Not sure how that’s derogatory.

Maybe the Fighting Irish and the Leprechaun logo…. maybe. It’s not like they’re the Fighting Micks.

The Tennessee Volunteers though… I don’t get that one at all. Tennessee is the “Volunteer State”.

Florida State has the most obvious mascot when it comes to native Americans. He is dressed in full warrior garb, painted face, spear is on fire and driven into the ground (only on natural turf) and then they start chatting the war cry…wait! they support more native American causes then anybody. OH! Never mind…
